Don't laugh, but the easiest thing to use is toilet paper. Tear off a small amount and stuff it around the wire and fill the hole.

I hade some new thermostats installed in my house. They appeared to be reading the incorrect room temperature. What it appears is that hot air from the wall were the wire is pulled is throwing the statoff. About a 1 inch hole. Is there something that you folks use to seal this up considering that it is only sheetrock. Is this possible?

also, what is source of hot? if attic, then go up there & seal all the holes down into living space! & put mastic on ducts & arount duct boxes, light fixtures.
BUT do no insulate over recessed fixtures, unless the label on each states ok!!!!!

how long does it take for the smell to leave the toilet paper or does it depend on the humidity?

Lets clarify this use "new" toilet paper, not used.
For a larger clearances like that use a wad of insulation slug / sealing compound or if your kid has silly putty that's probably the same thing. No installer should have failed to seal the penetration.

Yes, increased humidity will prolong the smell, but it depends more on what you ate rather than humidity.
