Hi there,
Any advice on the Fedders and Janitrol brand ?
Also, I was recomended a 3.5 ton, 10 SEER, ac unit for a 2000 sq ft ranch, in SE Michigan. Would that be a good balance?

Looks like Janitrol is manufactured by Goodman
How about the 3.5 ton to 2000 sq ft ratio
Only way to size it ,is a Manual J,fom ACCA ,load calculation.
Hit the bullseye above and do your own calc. ,for a few dollars.
Got any other choices? Spent part of yesterday working beside a new Janitrol 3 ton 10 SEER. My ears are still ringing
Haven't heard the 10 SEER Fedders. I've heard a few of the 12 SEER. 2 of them had nasty vibration from the fan. Made in PRC if you can figure out where that is
I just had two 3 ton Fedders 10 seer installed (heat pumps). I have no issues with the equipment. A few problems )addressed and repaired( with the install team. Non equipment related.
I have used all types and brands and the one common item is the installation must be done properly. If not no matter how much you have spent you are screwed.
My Fedders have a smaller footprint than say a Trane but they are still 10 seer which is what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay. Electricity is fairly cheap in Georgia so I saw no real payback. The Fedders are noiser than the Coleman Evcon that was replaced but quieter than the Goodman unit(s) I had at one time. By the way I did get 18 years of decent service from the Goodman which was considered to be very RARE.
As you know the PRC Peoples Republic of China is where most things come from now a days. I researched it and decided Fedders, a USA company, was running the show but with cheaper labor. I want to say the compressor (made in USA) has a 10 year warranty. The installer told me the finish on the Fedders was pretty good becase China does not have to worry about the paint VOC. The air handler is made in the USA and does not carry the Fedders name plate. Not sure why it just does not.
As I said am happy with the equipment.
junk is junk
Fedders....Coleman....Goodman...i'm starting to see a pattern here.

when the hell did fedders arise from the dead and who let it happen. my father sold them for 2 years back in the late 70s we had more trouble with them than you would believe.
But at least they got rid of the rotary compressors.

When I asked what brand I was referred to this URL on this website:

Along with many professionals agreeing it was the install that counted. Now what is it?
I installed a 10 seer Fedders a couple weeks ago and let me tell you i was suprised at the high-gloss paint,g-90 metal cabinet,9-11 factory options for unit, and it wasn't that loud.....and priced reasonable.I seen homeowner today and he seems happy with it.But like was said it's all about the install and i would have no problem with installing either brand as an economy unit....i will have to say that i am not crazy about the gas-furnace by Fedders with the smartvalve and some other design issues and haven't installed one yet,but from what i hear they are coming out with new design on furnaces this fall...
