When building decks around outside A/C units what is the recommended clearence around the unit and deck? I have be told 6-8in all the way to 3ft for breathability of the unit

Why not just move the condensing unit and allow plenty of room to service it.

I would want 3 feet as a minimum. Think ahead about a different style unit being there one day and actually servicing it.

or go ahead and build the deck with 6 inches of clearance so that it will have to be dismantled every time it needs service
The outside A/C unit needs a great deal of air to circulate through it to work properly--Block the airflow and you shorten the life of the unit . build the deck to close for someone to be able to work comfortably and you may not find anyone to service it.
and dont build the deck around it - or with custom removable panels to hide it either- it needs the airflow--like everyone has tried to tellyou ---move it if you dont like it's location
