Dimming interior lights

I like to use a #3 PENCIL INSTEAD OF A STICK. sticks get caught in that metel thing sometimes

i usaly tie a rope arround the shaft under the medal thingy and pull like i am starting a lawn mower. works every time. the rope has to be ten times the sise of the medal thingy and some times it can stick and get pulled back in. man does that hurt heheheheheh
make the call and have the unit looked at

It never fails , whenever I use a rope starter the handle breaks

did you try hitting it with a hammer and shouting obscene things at it. i find that this is especially beneficial. if you do it right, your neighbors will come out to see what the racket is. this will humiliate the unit and cause it to start working! problem solved!!!
