Excerpt from the GA secretary of state application:
All examination applicants must include a copy of a certificate of a Board approved
heat loss & gain & duct design course from a board approved provider OR show they
have completed ACT107 on a school transcript from a Georgia vocational/technical
school. Class II (non-restricted) applicants must provide proof of having completed a
board approved course for Manuals N&Q or Carrier Design 1,2,3. See separate list
of course providers.

Does Georgia have an Open Book test? I'd suggest finding a Tutor or go to a Contractors Exam School. A little help is good but you should be able to do the Load calculations. I know there's a bunch of charts in both books and they look to be worse than they are. Here in SC on the Contractors Exam you have to identify a bunch of duct parts we have some heat load questions but not an entire Manual J calculation.
On the Exams in SC in a multiple choice answer that's numeric, (a. 10, b. 37.5, c. 375, d. 12.5) in most all cases eliminating the High and the Low (c.375 & a.10) will increase your odds on totally guessing the correct answer.
And... How many times can you Fail the exam in Georgia? Go take the exam to see what's on it (if you don't have restrictions on retaking the exam).
Yes, I know I Shouldn't But I Just Can't Help Myself...

You must have a certificate from a certified instructor showing that you have sucessfully completed the required course: "Manual J & D Residential Load Calculation and Duct Design." Without it you will not be allowed to take the test for restricted license.
Contact: Denny Varnadoe, D & M HVAC CONSULTANTS, INC., Phone: 912-267-0086. He is a very qualified instructor. Thats how I received my certificate. More importantly, he gave me an understanding of duct design and load caculation!

Agreed! I also took this class before Denny took over from Buck. It teaches you how to use the books and find the answers. Well worth it, I passed the unrestricted test with a 90 on the first try.

That my friend will cost you way to much IMO. Taking a course locally is the way to go and costs a lot less. If you live near Atlanta there are several courses offered and will not kill your savings to go to them. I'm sure the one that dock and Ken suggested would be great. Thank you very much

Several years back I went to a course by Hugh Cole. It was offered around Gwinnett area. He does the manual J, manual D, and an exam prep.
Great investment and very good teacher.
-
Second Hugh Cole. If he is still doing it you won't find a more knowledgeable teacher and all around great guy. When I took the test the difference between restricted and non restricted was four questions. Not worth not going full unrestricted. They gutted the test and took out most needed technical info to make sure you can pay taxes correctly. More questions on tax code than anything else.

Hammerman, have you done the online manual j and d classes Garrison offers? I need to take the class but not sure which company offered the best class, and if online classes are as good as a sit down class room?

denny varnadoe good class. I took it some 15 years ago... although I had 2 years of tech school before that, so I knew the stuff decently well. Nevertheless, the prep class zoomed in on the EXACT areas the test looks for.... and as mentioned there is quite a bit of non technical information on the test! you can book mark your study guides. I finished the test in about 90 minutes with a very high score.
