#1 lennox pureaire #2 aprilaire 5000
Hey all,
New construction just about complete. Have 2 seperate systems (upstairs and down)...so I need 2 air cleaners.
The builder offers the Lennox EAC-20. Friends of mine have suggested the Aprilaire 5000. The two main reasons for wanting one:
1. Children w/ Asthma and allergies
2. Live in So Cal Desert...Lot's of dust to get ride of!
The Lennox, besides the filer and Ion stuff, it has those funky blue UV lights ( do they really kill germs)???
The Aprilaire...no funky blue lights...does it matter.
What do the pros think??? Please help a brother out... Thanks...Dr Grooves
#1 lennox pureaire #2 aprilaire 5000
That's it...I need more info.
1. Is the Lennox pureaire the same as the EAC-20? If not, what is the model name.
2. Whay is it better than the Aprilaire?
3. Is it becuase of those little UV lights?
4. If my choice is between the Lennox EAC-20 & the Aprilaire 5000...what's the best choice?
basic eac require monthly maintenance (and generate ozone)... no one services them like they are supposed to be ... the april air 5000 requires maint every 6 months to a year .... good design low cost to service ... pureair very expensive ... ok if you have serious lung ailement or 6 dogs (for odor) ... annual maint pureaire 150 to 300 ... aprilaire maint 60 yo 80 annual ... filter changed with regular checkup or by owner ... pureaire not homeowner friendly for service if you can even get the parts ... both have their place .... pureaire 2000+ to install ... aprilair 1200+ to install ... dont buy more than you need .... in 35 years i never sold eac because no one ever kept it clean once it was installed ... aprilair has the same charastics as eac but no maint and near zero ozone
My suggestion would be neither if you have children with asthma. Both produce ozone outputs because both use very high DC voltages. Asthma sufferers often have extremely adverse reactions to ozone. Check with their physician. I'm sure he'll verify this. Most physicians (and allergists) prefer the Aprilaire 2200 which is a very large passive air filter having about the same area as the 5000. The 2200 uses no electricity and therefore has no ozone output. It's an excellent system and the media only needs to be replaced on an average of once per year under normal usage with the blower motor being operated in the "auto" fan position at the thermostat. The cost of this system is much less than the other systems you mentioned. It's rated at 10 MERV and has much less airflow resistance compared to other high MERV filters. You could also have a UV setup installed along with the 2200.
you lennox dealer should have acess to a test of your indoor air. after a test period a 3rd party will evaluate iaq problem areas and make recommendations on what air cleaner will work best. ask tour dealer for an " Air Advice " test
