Thats what makes a water heater which is still capable of serving hot water to you......
Still a cold water heater. The cold water is on the bottom, and so is the thermostat.
Its already hot, right?
So why does the water heater cycle every time I use some of that "hot water" .It doesnt take much of a temp drop before that burner comes on and the water in it is still hot when it does
Thats when it becomes a "Hot water heater"

Like spotts posted....cold water enters the tank at the top through the dip tube (plastic pipe that goes from the top of the tank to nearly the bottom of the tank)...this water then gets heated and rises to the top of the tank and is ready when you open a hot water tap. So when ever you take hot water out of your "water heater" cold water enters the tank and the burner comes on to heat the water. If this dip tube cracks or breaks off then you end up getting a short supply of hot water which turns cold rather quickly.Originally posted by spotts

Humm, ya wunna get picky? Water is hot... it's just the users definition of hot that differs. If water wasn't hot, it'd be frozen, but even then it's still hot... since it's above absolute zero (which for all we know might still be hot compared to the hvac systems on some alien plannet lol).
"Hot" is a relative term. I've repaired a/c's at hot women's homes, but have also repaired furnaces where *HOT* women lived.
I would say it has an absence of heat if it's "cold".
I bought a returned water heater off the dock where I buy my rheem units. I learned about the dip tube because I guess the plumbers that originally put it in damage it. I was having the same problem so I pulled the cold water side and the tube was not in place. I went back and got one and now it is working great.
solar is mo better
Its not uncommon to melt off the diptube as you're soldering the fitting to the pipe. Should solder it separately or use a galv nipple or a really wet towel as a heatsink.
Is this a Fabreze moment? C.Y.D. I'm voting white elephant. 2¢.
see , I had never heard of the "Dip tube" before

Many brands had defective ones and as mentioned above, would not properly heat the water.

question...on a 2 element electric tank...does the bottom element heat first & satifies the thermostst..then when temp drops in top of tank from using water the top element comes on??...both elements do not come at the same time...i think
HEE HEE !! He said nipple and wet towel in the same sentence.Originally posted by gruntly

I am so easily amused aint I??
You can only add btu's to water till its 212 degrees F, with pure water and at sea level. So how hot can you make water,212.
It will not get any hotter.

Yea, bottom element does almost all the work. Top one only fires if ya run cold clear to the top. 1 element at a time tho- your right.

Unless that water is under pressure then it can be heated above 212 deg before turning to steam
He knew that. That's why he mentioned sea level.Originally posted by badbatch

That depends on the tank, and the controls. Most I have seen only one set of elements at a time. but I have seen a few that both the top and bottom element could come on at the same time.Originally posted by frigetater
