I am installing a Trane highboy oil furnace. How much clearance from the top of the furnace do I need for the evap coil. I believe at least 4 inches.or the coil could melt.. is this true?

    Thanks

Hopefully this is an upflow, most install manuals say 2" to combustibles, most coils have a plastic pan. So 4" would be safe. Alway's consult install instructions.

I always go 6 inches to be on the safe side. Oil is so much more hotter than gas as we all know.Regards HH.

Use a coil with a metal drain pan.. we always use them on oil with no problems

I've installed A-coils no more than 4" from the top of the furnace and no problems to date. Heat exchanger is probably at least 2" below that, so 4" off the top of the furnace is plenty.
