I started over 30 years ago with Trane. I love this business. I've had the privilege of working on everything from cryogenics to large tonnage upt to 7000 tons. Have at least another 15-20 years in me - I hope.

Howdy y'all,
Chase is the name, and it's looking like HVAC is the game. I've been in the AC business for the past 10 years, since I was 16, working my way up through the warehouse, into the office, and now out into the field doing sales, marketing, and advertising. Followed this site for quite awhile, just trying to learn everything I can, and now ready to make the leap into trying to participate.
A/C is the family business, and I just found out my little family will be having a little one added to it, so time to step up so the old man can step down. Long story short I'm starting on gathering all the material needed for the Texas contractors license, so figured I'd join up and see if I could coax some helpful tips from all you more "established" fellows in the industry.
Other than that, on the side I'm a pilot and aviation buff, sp any other flyboys out there just drop me a line and we can talk planes till the cows come home.

I think. Australian larikin which may or may not be obvious by now.Born in Melbourne - southern AU - State of Victoria, and never departed this amazing country. I hope you northern type can handle our or should I say my lame sarchasim humor. My strong background is refrigeration, be it anything under 0'c SST or should I say 32'f SST for you northern types. The last 7 years I've been mixing it with those enjoying the relaxed life in stuff above this SST - air conditioning of the DX world. Relaxed because fixing air con is a not very emergency situation like a feezer full of seafood.
I joined this site today because I became annoyed at this smart ass turd who claimed to be a chiller tech and I thought diving into the world of flooded vessles was a bit of a extended jump into a word of pain for me - thus invited this so called chiller tech to my contacted client site recently for 'quality' assistance on a ever loveable Trane RTAC300. 2 weeks later, low evaporator temp continues. We first reclaimed to find we where 20kg short on 180kg system charge. Thought to myself hmm, not quite enough to make me think short on gas would be a problem. but this chiller tech jumped up and down like a red nut razoo insisting these critical charged systems are a touchy *****. Whatever. Test the movement of the EXV, good. Test the calibration of liq level sonsor - yeah okay again. Whatever - 20 kg must be enough to play up. Nitro leak test, fix a tiny ass liq line leak myself. Somehow Trane thing liquid sealing goo beats teflon tape = pfft. Stick the 160kg of r134 back in plus the touch of added 20 kg BANG!~ low evap yet again. Thought 20kg was bollocks - proven. he spends 8 hrs and says dunno whats wrong replace exv and controllers (like yeah tell my client they need to spend thousands.) and pisses of home to his missus and kids, leaving me with a big ass bucket of failing chiller. I return the next day. no longer than 2 hours of personal brain storming, seeing liquid level remaining 0 and suct pressure boming out, i think geez, wonder if the evap is oil logged. follow pipe work, run things through my brain. hey wait. compressor 1a evap to compressor oil return is not opening like 1b comp does when comrpessor starts. hmmm. well stuff me the coil is rooted. one little hundread dollar soleniod coil later - presto flaming fixed you prick of a so called chiller tech. waste 3 days of my life reclaiming, leak testing and so on. Thats not a knife, THIS is a knife.
Moral of this entisively elongated storey, put your brain and heart to it, even a refrigeration mechanic can instantly surpass some chiller technicians so called $100 per hour buffon.
Back to why I joined. So I can read the threads toward picking up my own Trane TechView software and understand what USB to serial converter will actually work correctly. And this information is clearly posted here, thanks. Without asking this so called chiller buffon why he's running around with a 486 laptop for this reason. Surely my new Toshiba X770 can do that lame tech fiddling!

If ever I saw a tradesman natural born for ARP(Advanced Refrigeration Professionals), you are the one. Kinda remind me of a young Robo!
I think that Buffoon was in ARP(Advanced Refrigeration Professionals) telling stories about how good he is. It might of been him. Somebody was bragging down there.
Why don't you head on down to the bottom of the main menu and check out ARP(Advanced Refrigeration Professionals) and see if you recognize him?
And for a lighter side, check out the chiller forums. Several monkeys hanging out in there, just passin' time. Your lame sarcastic humor will go well with the lame brains that are known to crowd the chiller forum.

Cables to Go and many other brands of USB to Serial converters are out there. I'm currently using the Cables to Go version for Allen Bradley processors. Good luck.Hi-yaz.

I must however apologise for genrerally attacking chiller specialists. Was just a bit hot yesterday, obviously thought you and the whole world should know about it.
After several eposodes of being let down by such specialists known to making water/brine/whatever liquid thou shal desire just a little bit cold, I refuse to allow myself to become one. If this is a trend herein - hiding in forums related to single topics you know everything (apparantly). You don't learn beating your own drum. And if I don't learn, I feel dirty kind of. Sadly however, I don't think 'not looking outside the box' of fault problem solving is restricted to chiller techs. Sadly with electronics, others around me a hungry for some fault code diagnostics to tell them what to do. AKA parts changers. I've tried teaching newbies problem solving, it seems you ether have it, or you don't. I guess someone needs to run around cleaning filters never the less. But it freaks me out when I get sent to a job to pickup the peices of sever attempts by others. What did you do at trade school? Read the paper and play Angry Birds?
Anyway cheers, I'll remain in the mutual opinion bragging is ugly however. I don't think that was my objective, but it does read that way. Just wanted to vent how even a newbie could've diagnosed that if they whern't to scared in the first place and run the basics though their head.

indeed, forgot to consider the fact of our AU ability to hang craP on ourselves without even knowing it.
Like most newbies, I posted then read the rules, and thought geez if someone may take offence to me - I'm mandated by dad to apologise or be kicked/spanked/adulted. That last line sounds odd. The establishment made me do it.
These days, I don't know what I did / do believe. Bourbon beats PAG in velocity.
However I retrospectively miss the point a bit. Purhaps ADD comes to those with fault finding mind sets.
Purhaps I'm lacking conentration because I'm looking at the building BAS 100% today and growing egotistical might on a Trane chiller that hasn't faulted in 2 days since changing a tiny bloody coil in 10 minutes flat.
And happy Carrier #2 didn't do its usual current inballance trip at start up while backing her up for 2 days while waiting for part. Oh right, might consider fixing that monkey now I have confidence - if it wasn't raining I guess I'd have a crack. Purhaps she's scared of me now.

I started it the trade as a summer job after my first year in college. i did not do so well was doing residential install found out i liked the work in the fall asked to stay on and stared to go to school at night did that for 18 mouths. i stayed with my boss till a got my S2 and found a job in service work i started to do residential at first with light Commercial then i got a job doing all most all commercial work i found i liked it have been a little more than 8 years i have been working in the field and like it.

"Be sure to get your post count up" This seams to be the hard part. I have loved this site for a year or so and between work and home just have not had time to post up. At 40 now kicking around this industry for 20+ yrs and I just feel old. I am not a tech geek and prefer the day of 2 way radios and pagers rather than smart phones. From what I have seen this site offers great info and locking forward to unlocking more access more. So I guess I will try and Geek Up and try this new fangled I-pad and laptop, so far they have just been a gate way to solitaire!!!

Hello HVAC-TALK world.
I have been watching this site for a while now and coming here for information but never really posted. I am glad that this site is around because it gives me the opportunity to continue learning from the best in the industry. I have had the privilege to work with some of the brightest guys in HVAC/R today and look forward to meeting more and learning more from all of you here.
My history? I have worked with top manufacturers in HVAC and spend most of my time working with schools, the UA and techs nationwide. Personally, I like working with the educators the most (both UA and non-union educators) because I think that you are the some of the most dedicated professionals I have ever met. I also know that many of you who are not "educators" by trade spend a lot of your time educating those around you everyday. That is real commitment.
The rest of the world just thinks that HVAC/R is something that exists on the other side of a thermostat but you all know that HVAC/R is what keeps the civilized world going as it is.
Congrats and I look forward to learning more.
