My home has a xe 1100 Trane heat pump. 5.6 years old.
The outside unit isn't working, they came to look at it today and say it is the compressor for the air conditioning unit. I know absolutely nothing about this, I am widowed, they are telling me they only last 5 years and it will cost over 1k to fix.
Please give me some sound advice, I don't want to be taken advantage of.

it is very possible that what they tell you is true, and yes it could very well cost that much. I think if i was you i would spend the extra money and get a second opinion. You never know a service tech may have overlooked somthing, and it might not be your compressor. This is just my advice.

Where are you from, "they only last 5 years". Out here in the Utah/Nevada desert, they work hard, it gets over 110° for several weeks at a time, and I still give 'em at least 10-12 years!
Get another opinion. If the comp. is bad, $1K+ would be normal!

xe1100 is a very good unit if compressor in bad the cost is about right. i would think a second opinion shuold be given. there could be something overlooked and not the compressor.i think you should ask if it is still under warrenti some trane compressors were ten years and some were only 5 years have it looked at by a trane dealer and make sure.

So if they replace the compressor would the new one have the 10 year warranty? They are also telling me the new one only has a 90 day warranty.
The tech said it should have lasted 10 years. When he called they said mine only had a 5 year warranty on it.
Anyone know why mine would only have a 5 year warranty and some of the same model a 10 year.
Ie I have contacted Trane directly and they are of NO help.

The XE, XB, come with 5 years on the Comp. the XL's, & XR's come with the 10 year warranty.
And yes, 90 days on the new one or remainder of original 5 year warranty. You could purchase an extended warranty, I forget how much they go for, but get 2nd opinion from another Trane dealer!
Did they say how or what is wrong with it? i.e.: bad valves, locked rotor, shorted/grounded windings?

only 1 company
In there area in which I live there is only one company that works on Trane equipment. i will call today and see what they say exactly is wrong with it. Do you think I should just call another hvac company even if they aren't a trane specialist?

you should get a second opinion just to make sure. if you check with trane you should be able to get a list of dealers near you there should be more then one.
my consern is not so much did the compressor go bad as much as why it when bad. dont get me wrong 5 year old compressors do go bad and for no real reason but it is not that common. was the condenser coil dirty causeing high amp draw and high head pressure. this can cause failure. is the indoor coil dirty in heat mode can cause the same resolts. get a second opinion or find out what went wrong and why. it may have just went bad for no real reason but if there is a reason just installing a new one and not fixing the cause the new one will go to. 90 days isnt very long and you dont want to do this again in 6 months.i ask this because i warrenti all parts for 1 full year. and try to make sure i dont have to go back on that part.

I have found on some of the Trane Roto-lock compressors that they are to expensive and due to the systems age you can still get good life out of the rest, I have adapted a few to some Copeland Recips. Match it up to the last compressor and route the piping a little and you should be able to preserve the unit for a few more years and it should cost you a little less.

Yeah, guess you could do that, but the extra labor to repipe might make it less attractive. I have put Maneurope compressors in Trane units with good results, but you'd have to check prices and such to see if it was an option that might save you any money. Also, get them to price you a new outdoor unit. I know some want to change the indoor and outdoor on every job, but on a 5-6 year old system you'd probably be okay and probably get a 5 year warranty on the compressor in the new unit. You really need a couple of contractors to sit down with you and go over all your options and then decide what is best for you.Originally posted by youngoldtech

Another thing to consider is a second opinion.
According to Trane thirty percent of compressors returned to them "under warranty" are still good. Simply a misdiagnoses.
Pay someone for an hour of labor and get a second opinion.
You can also get a quote for repair/replacement when they are there.

if the compressor is out of warranty ...i do reccomend replacement of condenser rather than just compressor ...due to the fact comperessor failer may have been caused by failer from another componet if the revesing valve has stuck half open...it will kill the compressor. bad part is no way to test it ,until you have an operating compressor in the system.
