Why do we call the heat removal section of an hvac system an "air conditioner" ??

When you're in heating mode are you not "conditioning the air" from one state to another ??

In cooling you are removing heat and humidity to "condition" the space or "air", in heating you are adding heat and humidity to "condition" the "air".

So what gives ?? How did it get labeled that way ??

As always all types of answers are appreciated. Serious or not.

Why do we call it a refrigerator when many things are being frigerated for the very first time?
Why is it still cold and snowing out?
Why can't I get more than one number right on the lotto?
Why am I so smart as well as good looking....did I mention charming?
So many questions, so few answers, so much to do, so little time.

Maybe some of the crud in the air goes down the condensate drain? Oh no? Would you drink it?

Heating and conditioning are two distinct functions.
I suppose if cleaning the air is considered to be conditioning, then cooling and conditioning are also two distinct functions.

I think this "air conditioning" thing concerns the outdoor section. Under the "condition" you piped and wired me right, you'll get cool "air" inside.

I think no matter what you do to change the state of the existing air in a space is "conditioning" it.

By the way....I fed my kids last night. They had free pizza at the wrestling banquet.

My son came in 2nd in city and qualified for state.

    Smile Another proud father!

Matt, congratulations to your Son for going to State. I have bragging rights too! My son excelled in football. Those friday nights sure were fun! Your son will be OK in life. It seems he likes a good challenge. But, with my son, there for awhile, I didn't know if he would go to Penn State or the State Pen! Lets hope they make money so we can borrow from them somtimes and not pay it back. Roy

I've been telling my kids since they were born that they have to make enough to support us. One has to live in the mountains and one at the beach. We're going to live out of an rv and travel the country.

Of course towing the redneck Camaro.
