By the way...how did you pursuade an HVAC company to hire you as a start up man if you have to ask this kind of question?
If you have to ask this type of question on here, stay away from doing any start ups until someone in the trade has shown you hands on, with a complete explaination of why.
That's like asking someone over the phone to teach you how to weld. Watch, listen and take notes. In time, you won't even have to ask yourself, or others, this question.
Get back to work.™

Sorry sir, but most of us develop attitude problems from dealing with engineers with book smarts and no real world application.Originally posted by andrew boyce

Boy you are rather arrogant.
For all you know he may be smarter than you! and just wanted to check with the so called pros on this board to see how others did things.
I find your comments and others like yours rather rude and down right arrogant.
What is it with you HVAC contractors that makes you so mad at the world.. Come on now lighten up.
I am a member of other Boards covering subjects I have interests in and this is by far the most abusive board I have ever seen.
I was thinking I would get insight, Help and fun but sadly the attitude I find is almost exactly the same as what I find when I have the plumber or HVAC service person come to do work on my house. I gess it comes from years of dealing with cheep, pushy, demanding HO. But let me assure you that you would only come once to my house with that attitude!!!!
Sorry but I call it like I see it..

GIVE THE GUY A BREAK DAMMIT,
He came here in search of information on a task he needs to perform regardless of his employers attitude I think he has a good one.,I would say he is well on his way to being a good tech.Post him a fricken start-up sheet.

No way he will burn someone house down or blow it up.
He is going to the satrup regardless,he may as well have something to guide him.

the last two installs i did by myself everything from running the ductwork , copper, soldering, electrical wiring.
my boss gave me the bluprints, we ordered the material and i got busy. simple as that. they sent one guy to help me hang the inside unit, and he left. i know i'm still a rookie and have no problem saying that. i actually start this new job monday morning and was just curious as to what you guys call a "start up" . I like working in this field so far and know that i have a long way to go, but i've found this to be very satisfying work. thanks for all of your replies.

pdavis6061980 we were just funny with you do you know superheat & subcooling?
yeah, i know superheat and subcooling. i've charged a few systems using the superheat method. pretty simple stuff. although i havent charged using the subcooling method yet, but from what i understand it's fairly easy.
how exactly do you charge by subcooling? i know that it's by head pressure, but that's about it..
furthermore the company he works for REALLY could care less about YOU…..the HO!

THIS MY BE ONLY MY OPINION: but you have some nerve posting a statement like that.
The home owner to some of the people in this busniess are the customers we serve, without them we are not in busniess.
You wrote this as a result of Framehvac's post but what you and the other homeowners seeking advice dont know / dont understand and dont care about is that this is not a busniess for untrained people to work in. We work around dangerous conditions and part of repairing this stuff is knowing what those dangers are.
If the original poster really did get a job doing startups
the information he should understand the information he is recording. you dont just start on monday and automatically have a knowlege of thermodynamics- you gain that knowlege as a helper----it has nothing to do with caring about a homeowner-----
would say he is well on his way to being a good tech.Post him a fricken start-up sheet.
Hey eddie: you dont work in this busniess either do you?
The things that you have posted in the past are more on the line of a home depot expert.
Give this guy a start up sheet- you really have no idea , and dont care - about what the numbers on that start up sheet would tell AN EXPERIENCED TECH
and what if one of those startups happened to be a commercial application-who would be there to tell him how to check those three black wired for the proper voltage
Questions about who should pay for parking tickets?
$3000.00 tips accepted from an old lady
Give this guy a start up sheet
They answered all of those questions in tech school, even had practice parking meters--- you are not in this busniess
Wow CT@
I am speechless,I have never ran into anyone who knew so little about so much, you know let me tell you something, ahh nevermind you aren't worth it.
You really do beleive that I am a HO and not in the field don't you ? If I am, then you should try another field because you can not even compete with a homeowner.Do all of your HO customers know more than you ?

gotta tell you I am sitting back enjoying this. Glad to know it's not just me! Flames all around me, and I'm not even involved!
Best point made: someone giving advice on how to answer the person, but fails to provide the answer himself! That just exudes confidence!

I'm new to the field and have about 8 months eperience and 2 weeks trade school. I've been offered a job as a start up man for a local ac company. he says they are very large homes, 4 - 5 units per home. what all do start ups consist of? are there any kind of check lists or anything of that sort? Thanks
If they are going to train you then thats ok but if you have to do it by yourself you don't have enough experience sorry.
irishmist that is the answer if you don't like it then you tell him the answer & talking about flames you better hope he doesn't burn someones house down. Its not my job to give the answer that he is looking for I am just trying to state the truth.irishmist this isn't the first time, you just jumped in & blamed people just talk with us.

WHAT?
The home owner to some of the people in this busniess are the customers we serve, without them we are not in busniess.
Agree 100%

No, AB's
but what you and the other homeowners seeking advice dont know / dont understand and dont care about is that this is not a busniess for untrained people to work in.
Agree 100%
We work around dangerous conditions and part of repairing this stuff is knowing what those dangers are.
And getting training......Agree 100% I'm with ya!
If the original poster really did get a job doing startups
the information he should understand the information he is recording.
Lost me here....incoherent
you dont just start on monday and automatically have a knowlege of thermodynamics- you gain that knowlege as a helper----
Again, agree 100%
it has nothing to do with caring about a homeowner-----
Lets see ...the HO is buying a new house that is going to be started by an person with very limited understanding of the equipment and the proper procedures ....hummmm[/B]
AB had some trouble in another post that gave the impression that he has lost faith with hvac contractors. With that said, the point of my response was that here is a fine example of why us contractors (yes I am one) get a bad reputation.
In no way did I express any anger or disrespect to the young kid that asked about start-ups. If it came off that way I do apologize.
pdavis, IMHO you are being tossed to the wolves and as I said, you are aggressive and will most likely do just fine. The company that hired you should not let you perform start-up on your own until you understand their way of doing things. If their way of doing things is to simply hire a kid with little training then it sounds to me that this company is most likely doing trac homes and as we all know it’s about the bottom dollar and not quallity
It’s getting to be that too many people in hear are just looking to argue.

Thats the point.

I gave my answer to him, most did not just talked about why no one told him the answer. So lets see someone give the guy a checkout list someone step up.
I think your mistakenly under the impression that I agree with this kid doing start-ups without knowing what he’s doing???????
I’M NOT!
I don’t agree at all!
But it happens all the time! and WE the contractors get a bad rep.
I guess I didn’t get my point across ……..I’m so confussed!
Of course some of us are ASS U ME ing that the new company is just going to send him out by himself Monday.
He might ride with an experinced start up guy for awhile.
