You might be able to adjust the temperature rise on the furnace and thereby increase the flue temperature and prevent condensation. That's just a blower adjustment but must be kept within an acceptable range.

i would try to get a flex liner down thru chimney. would not be in a big rush to deal with ripping out asbestos pipe. any 80% furnace would have chance of same problem.
if he had noticed it coud be a problem you would have paid for it anyway. bite the bullet and just get it fixed before moisture destroys pipe.
