what winding is open when compressor overheats, c-r,r-s,or s-c?

Never really paid attention to that, if compressor was hot to the touch and windings open, I cool it down with water and wash condenser out for good measure, test the capacitor with my Supco tester, test run unit after windings close and figure out my problem. Usually it is a bad run capacitor or bad condenser fan motor causing compressor to overheat (assuming unit has gas in it and no hi pressure switch).

Is it a trick question? There is no "common winding."Originally posted by jgb123

If you get open between C-S,or C-R but ohms between R-S then you might have open overload.If open between R-S,then it is open winding,burned compessor.
