Someone posted on here awhile back something that works. He said to chew your food EXTREMELY well. One little bit of pizza you should chew 12-20 times. The theroy is that saliva is a natural antacid. Chewing will produce saliva.

I was always a scraffer so I tried this approach and it really does work.

Doctors and me don't get along. So I am not on any medicine. If I do get heartburn then I put a 1/4 teaspoon of arm & hammer baking soda in a half of a glass of water and drink that down.

This one really hits home with me. Mine started when I was in the Army. Today, I am on a strong medication I need to take daily. I have been to about a dozen or so regular doctors and 3 specialists. I have been scoped, choked prodded and gag.

Went through every diet and lifestyle change recommended. The bottom line for me is. There is a valve between the esophogous and the stomach. It opens as food passes and then tightly shuts. Like a check valve. Same concept. My check valve has lost it's elasticity or rather it's a weak muscle. The treatments for it are medication, which basically just reduces your ability to produce a lot of normal stomach acid to digest food speedily.

And the other option is to, take my stomach and turn it 360 degrees to tighten my check valve. The surgery is not always fruitfull and your laid up for months because of the trauma of the surgery having to disturb other organs attached to it.

My life was completely changed once on this medication. I take it once a day and I live a pretty much heartburn free life. Before I ever went to have it checked out and during the first few doctors, it just got worse and worse and there were days that I would get knocked to my knees with it. Tough to have that and do this kind of work.

Go to the doctor, and if he don't treat you with the right plan, find another. Eventually you will get one that can figure it out. I'd like to just add, that during my time with all the doctors, I have learned, as surprizing as it might be to hear, there are not may regular practitioners with any real true experience with this.

6 years ago, I was in the hospital for what my doctor thought was a heart attack. Turns out it was GERD, caused by excess stmoach acid. I took all sorts of medicines and stuff, but nothing really helped. I had some luck with Propulsid, but they took it off the market.

During this time, I went on a weigh loss program called "Protein Power" (a restricted carbohydrate program) and my GERD cleared up in a matter of days! I am now more than 4 years without a single instance of reflux, heart burn, or any of the other symptoms I used to suffer every single day.

My former doctor is still a friend of mine, and he recommends a low carb diet to combat acid reflux for his patients now.

Try this: give up ALL sugar for one week and see if your symptoms go away and stay away during that week. Then, go back to your regular diet for a couple days, and report back the results. I bet you a steak dinner that low carb/no sugar will solve your problem.
    Hindsight is NOT a plan!

Go to the doctor if it's persistant. My dad inlaw had what he thought was acid reflux but ended up being cancer in his esophagus. He took different antacids for about a year before he went to get it checked. He died 1 year after being diagnosed.

Only over-the-counter remedy that has worked for me is Prilosec OTC. It has been a miracle! I can work all day bending over- NO acid reflux!!
