I got a call today from a lawyer for a research firm telling me that I'm an hier to an estate left by someone on my grandmothers side of the family. I never knew the person who died, and my grandmother and mother have been dead for a number of years, so whatever it is falls to me.

At this point, I have no clue how much it is. It could be enough to cover a dinner and a movie, or it could be enough to retire early, the lawyer wouldn't say. He said he was sending me the information via Fed Ex, so maybe I'll know something later tomorrow, well, later today!

Must find a way to fall asleep!

Yes, be extra careful, lots of scams these days.
Never give them money for taxes or bank acct numbers, nothing.
My aunt was the only one who ever left me any money. She was never married, as a kid I remember her telling us she was gonna leave her money to her nephews and nieces....damn if she didn't. Took awhile, we all had to sign stuff, about a year or so and we all got checks.

I had an aunt (my uncles widow) that did the same thing.
None of her relatives from the other side had been in contact for years.
We had to hunt them down & give them their share.
Dopeheads and ne'er-do-wells came out of the woodwork.

Many times, when you see my post has been self-edited, it is because I read that signature line, after I posted.

Sometimes the reason people can't sleep is that their mind is not at ease. My wife has been wanting to get on to me for two days. No pease of mind for me! Enjoy while it's good.

Well, I got the letter today, Fed Ex early delivery.
It isn't a scam, at least not to steal money I already have.

I still don't know who died, or how much money is potentially involved, there is some real serious old school money floating around in some of the branches of my family tree though. Unfortunatly my branch of the family tree never got much sun.

The guy that contacted me is with a "forensic geneology" firm. They say they will handle all the legal end of things, I just have to sign over to them the authority to do so. No money is involved from me, they get paid from any dispersment that I may get.

Sounds good, but here is the kicker. They keep 2/5 of whatever I get. I guess they think saying 2/5 sounds better than saying they get 40%!

Don't worry, I ain't signing nuthin till I talk to my lawyer. Now I just have to find someone to be my lawyer.

I don't want to be one of those long lost relatives that start popping out of the woodwork with lawyers when someone dies, but hey, I ain't turnin down free money if they want to track me down to give it to me...

I sincerely hope this works in your favor but, when I read this my "BS alarm" went off. It doesn't sound right. Make sure it's a GOOD attorney.
