why are supply vents so loud?!?!?

Hoping someone can help me with this. The air coming from my vents is really loud to the point where it can be distracting and annoying? A local HVAC company rep said it could be because of the ductwork but i live in a townhouse and both of my neighbors don't have the same issue. I'm pretty sure the original unit was a two ton heat pump, which is what both of my neighbors are running. I am currently running a 2 1/2 ton unit with matching air handler. Could it be that my unit is over sized and the blower is forcing too much air through the ducts? The duct work runs up from the basement with the returns by the floor and supplies coming from the ceiling (1st floor). On the second floor supply vents are on the floor as well as the returns that i have (on the wall by the floor). House is listed as 1420 sq feet but i've measured the main floor to be roughly 17 ft by 33 ft (1122 sq feet of conditioned space?) I've been thinking about putting in a new system (you can see my only other post related to this) to address this and some other issues i've been thinking about. My question is what are the possible issues? Any feedback is appreciated.

Most pros here would not recommend that you try and adjust the blower speed yourself. In fact, this (rotation speed) may not be your problem.

I did not realize that what i posted was considered "DIY". I'm in no way trying to adjust anything or fix any issue i may be having. I'm simply trying to get feedback on what the issue could be...? I hope that is not breaking the rules. I respect the rules and understand why they exist. Thanks for the quick reply.

Well, that's good. You had already mentioned attempting to adjust the motor speed. Unless you are in the business, that would be DIY in point of fact.

Without being there, any observations we might make would truly be speculation. You need a good contractor to come and see what is happening. I usually recommend that folks ask three friends whom they have used and would use again, and call for an appointment using that personal referral, "my friend Mr Smith, your customer, recommended you."

Your system could be set up wrong. A good HVAC tech can check it out and tell you. If you are thinking of putting in a new system make sure this is addressed, or the new system could be just as bad.

I had the same problem. My old furnace was way oversized, and as a result, the air flow was much higher than the house needed and too high for the ductwork.

i've had a few local well known companies come out and give proposals for a new system and i've asked about this issue but i get the same answer, its the ductwork. Well, if thats the case, why do my neighbors not have the same issue (rhetorical)? The two gentlemen that have come out have really just based a new system on the existing system and were in and out in no more than 10 minutes (i think one guy was here no more than 5). When asked about the increase from a 2 ton to 2.5 ton, i was told that this was for extra heat so i don't have to rely on aux heat. But, what if 2.5 tons is too much? I don't want to try and rush to get a new system in if its not going to be done the right way. Again, thanks for the feedback. Any speculation/thoughts on my issue is more than welcome by me. I've done a lot "google" research on this and am just curious what others think. Its better than nothing.

I am going to say this, they are loud cause there is to much air comming out for what they are designed for. If you are getting estimates, have the contractor do a heat load calc. and prove the size you need.

He said that he has done a lot of work over where i live and the duct work for our houses is too small for anything over a 2 ton unit. He says that some people try to upsize new units but the ductwork is undersized. He knew a lot of history about the contractors that did the original duct work and explained that he thought it is just too much air being forced through. Finally, someone who took their time to listen to me and gave me very valuable information. And it was at 8:40 on a friday night. He was more than willing to give this information and was not trying to force some type of service to come out and look at it. Thank you to all you guys out there who are like this gentleman.

the real definition of a profesional. 1st is the customer. 2nd is listen. 3rd is answer his question. You got lucky with one that was familiar with your building. If you called me I would have to see it in person, as would anyone to give you an answer. just can't go throwing assumptions out there.
