I think that it's purpose is to equlize pressures in the off cycle so the compressor doesn't have to hard start.
I'm just guessing.Karst means cave. So, I search for caves.

I've never seen anything like that, maybe it is supposed to be a bypass and they screwed up at the factory and connected it to the wrong place

It looks like it has a check valve in the fitting going into the vapor line.
I have no idea what that could be for...If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

OK, I hope I am saying this right (but I probably am not)
Remember this is a heat pump, which means in the heating mode, this is our TXV, then feeding the distributor. So it kind of acts like a desuperheating TXV and just redistributes the flow to keep pressures equalized.
Yes, you are correct. All of the ICP TXV's are bi-flow with a built in check.
It does appear that it may have been replaced. What model and serial is this thing ?
Hope this helps..........

Could not see your pics on the post.
I would need a M# S#.
ICP had a 14 seer unit with an equalization tube for the heating cycle.
It did not work well. You need to contact ICP if you are a contractor for more info. The unit was produced for one year only.
