I would go out the roof in a heartbeat.
Unles it was standing metal seam, tar and gravel or concrete tile.
Then I would still do it but would call a roofer in.
Hi,
New here and looking for your sage advice.
Our home is a one story 1949 ranch. I'm installing Panasonic ceiling fans in both bathrooms and have run into a snag...
I'd like to run the 4" duct to the exterior wall (not the roof). This is about a 6 foot run. But we have hipped roofs and the height between the ceiling and the roof is about 2" at the exterior wall.
I stopped by our local HVAC shop today and they didn't have much. I guess I could fabricate something myself that would include a 4" duct coupled to a thin rectangular duct. But I doubt that I'm the first person with this problem. I'm also considering using 4" PVC, use a Y to divide the line into 2 lines and reduce both lines to 2" to get through the wall. I run the risk of neither being all that pretty. Any ideas? Ideally, I'd like to have a louvered vent, but that seems highly unlikely right now.
Thanks,
Todd

Me too, to the roof. Worried about flashing it yourself? If you are creating a weird piece to pop through the narrow spot on the exterior wall, then you should be able to handle the roof.Originally posted by Collin

Height is usually much more than 2",as the frming is at least a 2X4plus the angle of the pitch.
are you sure?
Usually a 3.25X10" ,standard vent will slide in at the angle of the roof pitch.
Okay, I'll do the roof. But, but, but, it is brand new. I guess that was my only real reservation.
Yes, I've tripple checked the height. The rafter tails have been cut so there really only is about 2 inches.
Thanks for the advice, everyone.
Okay, when buying hvac supplies, are there places you avoid and how do you identify quality products? My local shop has some of the worst customer service. But I'm guessing that I should still go there rather than HD.
