If you have a 2 story house, do you HAVE to use both hands.... or just a percentage of the first five digits ?

Do you stand on the curb next to the house or the one across the street? I always get so confused when doing load calcs.

The sizing by "rule of thumb" is really starting to piss me off. I spend the time and money sizing all of my systems, manual J and D. Some dumb-ass comes in and does the three fingers sizing, doesn't have insurance, no workers comp, and gets the job after I have invested 4 hours in the project to size it right. And to top it off the homeowner gives my calculations to "Dumb-Ass Heating & Cooling" to use. I have to get hard-case about giving the homeowners the calculations from here on out. No Contract No Calculations, PERIOD.

I’m with you one man. I'm curious though. Will you withhold the specific tonnage and BTU's from the H.O.? In other words, not even tell them verbally? What will you put on the estimate? If you let the cat out of the bag even verbally then your calcs may still end up in Dumb-A’s hands.

I haven't really decided yet. But I think I'm going to skip doing calcs in advance of the contract all together. I'll either give them one cost that covers any possibility. Or I'll give a bid for a couple different tonnages and BTU ratings and let them know we'll go with the one that matches the final load calc. Whaddayatink? I can show them example load calcs from past jobs and educate them about their importance. But it's too much damned work doing them (at least it is on these large square footage houses with all the architecturally odd shapes) just to get turned down.

I will give an example:

I got a call from a homeowner that was in the process of picking a heating contractor for his 9000sq/ft. home about a month ago. I provided all of the documentatation on efficiencies, warranties, load calcs, air quality, and pricing on a ton of options. The homeowner calls back with a boat load of questions regarding the proper way to install the system, no problem. A week goes by and I am at the supply house and overhear "Dumb-Ass Heating and Cooling" bragging about the big job at xxxx S. Main Street they are doing. OK so I didn't get the job. Two days later the "homeowner calls and asks more questions about the job, I say no problem I will meet you there in 20 minutes, and hang-up. I get to the job and the general tells me that the heating company has been on the job for 3 weeks. No Contract No Calculations No Install Instructions, PERIOD.

We've all read your posts and frankly if you are indeed using the techniques you say you are in selcting a furnace or charging an a/c system, then dont plan on anyone here taking you seriously. In fact, I might add but the information you give suggests (again if you truley believe the crap you post) that you are the kind of guy we all talk about when we reference a hack or DYI. If you are just funnin' with your anicdotes, try to be a little more obvious with the satire so people know when your just pullin their legs.

For Homeowners, anyone you consider hiring that suggests that the proper way is just an excersize in futility is the guy you would last want opening his van door in your driveway.
