Mike, the condensate drain, pan & coil are almost always
on the negative pressure side of the air handler (unless
you are using an add on incased coil). If the trap on the
condensate line goes dry, like it will in the winter on a heat pump, then air being drawn thru the drain pipe will be
from the plumbing vent. That might be methane gas plus sewer odor. It is against plumbing codes and is obviously not a good idea. If the system has a dirty air filter or return air problems, the situation becomes even worse.
