Keep your eye on Goodman's GMPN units for cracked collector box's. I usually find them cracked like this.....
Same furnace, found a nice long crack in the primary HX. Do any of you guys know if the replacement HX comes with the collector box installed or is the old one re-used?

Those who dance, appear insane to those who do not hear the music.
Those who believe, appear ignorant to those who do not know God.
You know what I find interesting, I brought this failure to our Goodman supplier TWICE, once last week when I picked the part up and once today for another furnace. He tells me he hasn't heard of any issue with it--we both agree that it MAY be over tightening of the screws and with the high heat--it may be cracking....Im not sure exactly why tho....
but he always seems to have them ready in stock?!? :S
I ordered one of these 4 times for the same house. Every time I would open the box, the damn collector was either cracked or broken. And there was no discernable damage done to the box. Just opened up and bam! Broken. Finally got an intact one on the fourth try. The customer was livid. I said you get what you pay for.
Not as lean, not as mean, but I'm still a hardcore, ass-kicking, hard charging Marine! Oohrah!
not familure with gmpn units. Oil? commercial?

yes, the GMPN I worked on was 10yrs old. This unit has a clam-shell HX. The GMV is newer with tubular HX. The newer units are better, but Goodman needs to put in a better ventor motor that doesn't whine after 2-3yrs IMO.
Correct me if I'm wrong on any of the above, I don't service too many Goodman products.....
yeah, I just remembered this product.
And yes, the jackal motors blow.

To put how dangerous that crack in the collector box can be into perspective..
had a no heat call last yr, HO had been out all day didn't come home until late at night and furnace obviously left running during the day....
The ignitor was cracked
I get into the dark and small basement and all I smell is gas. So I'm thinking gotta find a gas leak somewhere..
Once I got some more lights on, I find the collector box was cracked and the furnace was probably cycling on flame failure...No gas leaks were found--concluded that the raw gas was seeping through that crack and gradually filling the basement up.....
if the another furnace had that crack, it probably would be seeping CO into the furnace and gradually finding its way into the home...
since than, I've shut off all furnaces with cracked collector boxes, cause you never know when the ignition source fails on the furnace and the next thing you know is there was an explosion and/or death....
the glory of plastics eh?

I just ran into one of these the other day. Had a broken ignitor too, but no gas smell. I think it was off on too many re-tries.. But I like the newer goodmans , seem to be a good value in most cases imho. ymmv..
Supply house said most are caused by overheating. Dunno but this one I saw had a nasty filter that had been in for eons..
That's why bubble gum was invented.
