Excellent chance for the control geeks to vent their worries to field techs. Having been working my way up in the HVAC and Refrigeration fields by self motivation and perseverance for the past 15 years, I think it is safe to say that if you don't know how the equipment works, then you will not be able to understand the controllers and how they are SUPPOSED to work, not to mention fixing the REAL problems. I'm not trying to get on a soapbox, but dealing with various people ranging from design engineers down to field techs who are "self-proclaimed experts", there is a vast cloud of confusion as to the way various DDC systems control equipment. My personal beliefs are that you need to be able to fix both the equipment AND controls in order to be successful...
