...or a relly dumb tech. The set screwws were never installed in the pulley. The motor was the wrong hp, the motor was set at 460volts instead of 230volts. I guess they used a cheaper contractor, but they just got burned and were without heat for three days. They got charged for the motor replacement twice. Oh well, they will never call anyone else again.

    OUCH!

Looks like the coil took some abuse a few times. Amazing they don't always leak after a belt wacks it a few times.

Was that commercial, or just an OLD residential unit?

Nice. Worse than that is them HUGE 7 ton SPLIT heat pump trane air handlers shoved above t-grids with shatty access. I find the belts overtightened a lot here and them rubber mounted bearings fall aparts and grind metal to metal. Then you try to access the backside but can't because the installers who replaced the unit put it in a place where you can only open ONE panel when you need to access TWO panels to get to both bearings.

I'd take a RTU any day vs. a commercial split.

I used to work on a Trane 33 ton split system with a single compressor. There was 3 units, one had a 30lb. a year leak. The leak was in the middle of the evap coil and not repairable. Over a $1000 a year to add ref.

Agreed, walked away from a $10k+ a year maintenance contract for a printing company after the first year because they were all 7+ton splits above a 15' grid cieling.

Paper pulp + corn starch + inaccessable split systems + tightfisted bean counters = find someone else, buhby
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

Exactly. Sometimes it just isn't worth it. But for now I don't get to make the choice very often since I'm just the guy DISPATCHED out when them kind of calls happen.
And if you make a comment to the dispatchers or someone about the job being crap, they just think you are a complainer. Too bad companies don't do more ride alongs to get some office people up in them tight and often HOT spaces! They'd not be too quick to sell yearly contracts to gawd aweful jobs!

Hey Payson,When these companies technicians has a really bad accident or even a death from one of these unsafe unit locations, they'll pay,but for us it will be too late. Always be safe...ALWAYS. I know a guy who was hurt, out 6 months from surgery, released from the doctor to return to work, and the company said "Sorry,we are not able to hire you back, your injury is a huge liability for the company".He was also told that by other companies he applied for.
Treat these unsafe situations as if you are your own company, because honestly...they won't and can't do a damn thing for you returning to work as a technician again. We have to make it a long time out there,so be safe always, and to hell with them if they want to put us in a dangerous situation...We hold the cards on this matter, not them!!!!

Uh, is the adjustable half of the sheave on the motor on bassackward? No wonder it threw the belt...was there any belt left?
Def. of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results!!
