I think i have a stuck compressor. It is a 120 volt on a ice cream display case and I was told to try hitting it with 240 volts for a second to break the compressor lose. Does this sound right and how do I do this. JC Heating & Air
Thanks

I'm not a DIY....I'm a contractor and own my own business.....Just looking for someone that might have done this before. I had never heard of doing this before.
Wow, thats strange..being in the business and you have never tried to break out a stuck compressor? Im sorry if I sound skeptical, but we have been getting a huge cache of DIYers lately.
Never had a stuck compressor before. I actually think it might be gone. This unit has been charged before by another company and I have now found a leak where the service vale and compressor meet (the gasket) looks like it has been blown out....have black paint that is peeling and i noticed the last charge was 3lbs4oz on a 59 oz system. I have a hum from it with a 49 amp draw with a lra of 59. I hate to tell her but i think its time for a new one. Customer is a good friend and trying to keep her business open..almost closed last month but is remodleing and down sizing to try to stay going....this is going to kill her.
go down to the wholesale house and get the right start capacitor. If it won't unlock it with that, change it out before you burn it out. Good luck
You could try a booster. I would change it out though. You might get it to work and it will fail a week or two down the road.

Yes you can apply 240v to the compressor to try and unlock it,or if your in the business you can buy a hermedicheck for about 260.00 its a good investment it checks start, run, and relay, and has a reverseing mode to sometimes unlock a stuck compressor..
Hey tool time,
Where can one get a hermedicheck? I have not heard of this type of instrument before. Is it worth buying?
Uf the compressor has a start capacitor, hit it with a larger cap, 50 t0 100 MF should do it, If not get a new compressor.
hvac1970,
First, try installing a start capactor/relay, if that doesn't work.....replace the compressor! Even if you could get it to start, its already damaged inside and can fail at any time. I know your friend is strapped for money, but what would it cost her if she came to work on monday morning just to find that the system failed sometime saturday night, how much product would she loose??? Sometimes, it is what it is. If she is a friend, replace the compressor and don't charge her, let her know that she can pay you when she gets back on her feet. Really, how much could it cost, one to one fifty.

If it is a K body compressor you may need to lower the crankcase pressure befor it will start and if that is an issue look at the discharge valves.
