Sending isn't as good as walking in. Nothing like a clean cut face and a hand shake.
I believe a lot of companies in nyc have a practical written exam, which goes on file with resume.
This site is across America, i would stand in front of a abco, and ask Mechanics. They'll probably say no, but get the names of the important people within the company(Hiring Department)
So when u call u can skip the screening process from the secretary get a direct connect.
Just a thought, good luck

look at several companies in South Westchester (Yonkers, Mount Vernon) and the like. A lot of these companies do a majority of their work in NYC, also look in Long Island City.

They are hiring left and right looking for the right tech for the right money (meaning cheap). My company hire 5 tech in 2 months and lay them off already just to finish up some jobs. There is allot of competition out there with contractors, many tech becoming contractors are starting off a 1 man business that a fully staffed company cannot compete with price wise
I myself is job hunting about 1 year for a bigger pay check, when I quit my full time job someone will eventually fill my place, it's happening in all companies.
I started subcontracting part time to make some more money, pretty soon I be looking to hire some guys.
