Worked on this one recently.
Very unusual problem, and thanks to those here who helped me to solve it.

Wrong distributor for hot gas defrost, was flowing through the orifice screwing up your defrost?

Is that hot gas line piped in correctly? (sporland 20-10 shows special distributors for hot gas). I'll sit back and wait for the education.

Took me 4 service visits and 2 phone-a-friends to find it.
Cases were originally hot gas defrost. Were converted to electric and then converted back to gas.
For whatever reason, the person doing the first conversion, from gas to electric, decided to replace the distributors with electric ones.
We did a rack conversion in the store and the ice ups started a few months later.

So did you replace the distributor or just add an Auxiliary Side Connector? (assuming this was a Sporlan distributor)

We replaced a total of 7 distributors (out of 9 cases).
Also, wound up replacing 18 front pan heaters because somebody couldn't tell the difference between a 208v and a 120v pan heater.
This remodel job wound up being a DISASTER!

I am dealing with the EXACT issue right now with a local independent. They hired the area low bid hacks to move and repipe the cases in a minor remodel. Went from electric to gas. The piping looks just like the picture you showed. In addition, the liquid line was not up sized for proper draining and the suction was not properly piped and bullheaded for reverse flow. Cases build ice and need thawed ever 2-4 months. Its a giant mess.
