Was Nietzsche writing about Beck in "The Use and Abuse of History"

Nietzsche writes "Monumental history lives by false analogy,”“It entices the brave to rashness, and the enthusiastic to fanaticism by its tempting comparisons. Imagine this history in the hands—and the head—of a gifted egoist or an inspired scoundrel; kingdoms would be overthrown, princes murdered, war and revolution let loose,"
"War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it." Sherman to the leadership of Atlanta prior to burning the city.

"Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen."
    Albert Einstein

Romney campaign: "We're not going to let our campaign be ruled by fact-checkers,"

Lindsey Graham: “We’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”

The quote cannot be found by Washington.
"Washington is known to have made some official statements of public piety, but this is not one of them. Though this assertion is very widely reported to have been said in Washington's Farewell Address (17 September 1796), this is not actually the case, as any search of the documents would reveal. It has also been presented as having been part of his Proclamation on 1795-JAN-01 of 1795-FEB-19 as a day of national Thanksgiving"
Important to recognize that whoever this one person is that is the source for all of the posts I see on the internet attributes the quote to gw's farewell address. Any search of the documents refers to the farewell address documents.

Actually the quote is unverified or not a quote but paraphrase. According to James K. Paulding who wrote a biography about GW. Paulding quotes Washington as saying "It is impossible to account for the creation of the universe without the agency of a Supreme Being. It is impossible to govern the universe without the aid of a Supreme Being". 9
Not word for word, but same thing. Pauldings book was written back in 1835. A few years before the daily kos and the huffington post.

"Glenn Beck Wrongly Asserts that Mussolini and Hitler and Castro were Elected Democratically"

I read the transcript when Beck said this. I'll agree that Beck is really full of crap in his accuracy, BUT the thrust of the discussion was how Hitler, Castro, and Chavez who was elected democratically all became dictators. It was a discussion about how dictators are made and how they were able to rise to power.

How is that for being wrong on history?
Well its definately inaccurate, not sure it's lying. In any case, the point Beck was making when he spoke these inaccuracies is compelling without the inaccuracies.

How about the lie that he held Washington's inaugaral address in his hands?
Not sure he didn't hold it. He was presented with the document in the vault by an unamed official, during a private tour of the achives... Talk about unverified..See above.

I think there is some validity to the criticism of Beck. He's a bit sloppy, but he does make some interesting points and arguments. I can see why the left does not like him.
It is funny how leftists are so critical of a tv talk show hosts accuracy while ignoring real politicians who claim to have fought in vietnam when they did not( Richard Blumthal-D), or claim they were injured by enemy fire when they were not,(John Kerry-D) or that they had to make a tactical landing under fire when they did not(hilary clinton-D), or that they invented the internet when they did not,(Al Gore-D) or that they did not have sexual relations with that woman when they did(Bill Clinton-D) or that he has 3 university degrees when he has only 1(Joe Biden-D) or that they were not aware of interrogation techniques including enhanced interrogations when the were(Nancy Pelosi-D) or that they did not know Rev Wright hates white people and the u.s.a after sitting in his church for 20 years (Barack Obama-D)..l

Actually the quote is unverified or not a quote but paraphrase. According to James K. Paulding who wrote a biography about GW. Paulding quotes Washington as saying "It is impossible to account for the creation of the universe without the agency of a Supreme Being. TAKEN FROM GEORGE WASHINGTON CHRISTIAN STATESMAN
"There is a very real possibility that the quotation has its origin in an 1835 biography by James K. Paulding. In a description of Washington's character, with supporting quotations, Paulding declares Washington to have said:

It is impossible to account for the creation of the universe without the agency of a Supreme Being. It is impossible to govern the universe without the aid of a Supreme Being.[9]

The similarities are obvious; a paraphrase of these quotes could have easily generated the words in question. However, we have not been able to trace Paulding's cite to a more scholarly reference. He offers no footnotes"
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is the full context of your reference. That quote cannot be found either.

This is no proof that GW said either "quotes." Just a reminder, we were debating Beck's accuracy-honesty. BTW the article you seem to be citing is by David Barton, a known liar.
"War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it." Sherman to the leadership of Atlanta prior to burning the city.

"Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen."
    Albert Einstein

True, but the quote is widely attributed to Washington. There are many quotes which are disputed, such as "I cannot tell a lie" Almost everyone believes Washington said that, and probably he did. Why would the biography make it up?

Since the rally leftists have been breathlessly trying to discredit Glenn Beck. While I do find it a little annoying that he has been inaccurate occassionally about trivial things, on substance the criticism is clearly very weak. You called him a liar.

BTW the article you seem to be citing is by David Barton, a known liar.
Are you saying then that James K. Paulding did not include the aforementioned quote in his biography about GW written in 1835? Or is James K Paulding also a liar too?

Real liberal politicians in power tell real lies, and I mean whoppers and they seem to get a pass from you lefties. How do you explain that?

    Beck has earned his reputation.

There have been liars and people with agendas around forever. If GW said that it there would have many sources because every group would love to "own" GW. Barton even says not to use that quote lol.

Here is a link to the Library of Congress. http://www.loc.gov/index.html

It also appears you quoted an abbreviated version of the source.

Interesting but in the original account of the "I cannot tell a lie" story the cherry tree was not cut down. I think it is a good example of, "if you repeat it enough people will believe it." BTW George Washington "slept here" too.

The quote I am referring to is the quote found in the book written by James Paulding in 1836, not the quote that Beck used. They are essentially the same. Are you saying Paulding is a liar, or that the quote is not found in his book, or are you simply nit picking Glenn Beck?

Of course they will. The quote actually comes from another biographer who is quoting GW and the quote does nothing to misdirect the audience unless of course you think GW was a serial liar like al gore.
So anyone who says gw is the source of "I cannot tell a lie" is a liar?..Ironic, dontcha think.

What do you make of Barack Obama claiming he never heard rev wright spewing his racial vitriol in church.? Is that a lie?

What do you make of the claims by members of the black caucus that the n-word was chanted at them by members of the tea party as they entered the capital building. Though many cameras and cell phones were present and a 100k reward was posted for evidence that this actually occured, no proof was ever found.

No credible historian uses that quote. Barton who is a known liar says not to use the quote that Beck used. Barton even admits that Paulding gives no source for his different quote. The paper trail on Washington is extensive as I gave you a link in a previous post. Groups would have jumped on either quote if it was legitimate.

How is that a lie? Because Rev. Wright said something in church that does mean Obama heard it. BTW I have heard many hateful things said in churches.

Ok, just making sure you are reading all of what I am saying. lol..

I'm merely trying to establish your threshold for what you are willing to believe or disbelieve.

Beck makes some inaccurate statements of which the substance is unconsequential. and you call him a liar.

Obama was in Wrights Church for 20 years and claims he never made remarks like the remarks made famous during the campaign.
I don't believe him and the consequences could have cost him the election. Even your so called unbiased liberal media people banned together to try and kill the story.
I can't prove Joe Biden does not have 3 college degrees, but I don't believe he does. Consequential, not really but clearly he did not forget how many degrees he has. This is more about what type of person he is...a liar.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think I am going bananas. We disagree that Beck's "stretching" of the truth goes to substance.

Re, Joe Biden it seems you are referring to something that I am unfamiliar with. But Biden supposedly double majored in political science and history then got his law degree. He has his law degree so it is sure he has atleast 2 degrees. This does not include honorary degrees, which is generally hogwash. Beck didn't even finish one class in college and he has atleast one honorary degree.

Frankly I think most politicians lie to some degree. And I usually weigh the lie with the subject and importance. I have a much higher standard for "newspeople" and the media. This is just me, and it is more difficult today with the thin line with news and entertainment.

On a sidenote about GW, there was no popular vote in our first 2 presidential elections and it can be argued technically he was a confessed murderer. And basically credited for starting the French- Indian War.

    Pagey liberal jim.
I can tell by the number of your posts putting down Beck that he gets under your skin. That seems to be a common thing with libs. When someone points out the truth about what the libs/socialists/communists are doing to this country the libs/socialists/communists mock and ridicule them and call them liars.
The American people are finally catching on to you people and they are pissed.
