pump pressures

Can anyone give me some insight into what happens in terms of presure on both sides of a pump when it is used in a system like a house's water well. I had a leak on the suction side of mine and it seems it took on air when the guage on the tank got up to about 50 lbs. When the pump shuts off, is the suction side still under vacume until enough air enters to equal out at atmosphere then starts to leak water out? Just wondering out loud. I know there are some pretty technical guys on here.

Are you speaking of a deep well jet pump ? If so you should have no air in the lines. Those two line go down to a foot valve at the bottom of your well. Could be a bad check valve there.

No, not a jet pump. One line goes into the well and yes, it has a foot valve, one the other side of the pump a line leads to our tank. I should add that I already fixed the leak. I am just wondering about the pressure relationship on each side of the pump.

Your question is sort of vague, more info would be helpful. If you had a leak on the suction side of the pump, make sure you prime the pump to remove any air from it. You may have to do this multiple times before removing all the air.
