Dealer trying to determine if our 4 yr old Compressor is out

What is the test ('annie' ?) needed to determine if the compressor on our Carrier 3 ton needs replacing:

    * Heat of day it shuts off.
    * Starts back up after awhile.
    * Misting water on the outside unit speeds up the cool-down

Or.. is there a thermo switch that causes this compres. to shut off. Dealer guessing it's the compressor(warrantied for part)

It work fine early evening and thru the nite

Your HVAC company should be able to determine the cause of the problem. There could be more than one issue that creates the same syptom but it takes depth of experience to ferret out the cause.
If YOU want change, YOU have to first change.

If you are waiting for the 'other guy' to change first, just remember, you're the 'other guy's' other guy. To continue to expect real change when you keep acting the same way as always, is folly. Won't happen. Real change will only happen when a majority of the people change the way they vote!

    Losing confidence.

    They replaced a warrantied capacitor.
They replaced the 'heat' line(?) from 1/4" to 5/8----"We didn't catch this in Dec when we put in the furnance."

Now they want to send out another tech to get his opinion---no charges for all this yet.

Do you think the smaller line in use for 3 months could ruin the compressor?

    1/4 to 5/8? That's quite a jump. Maybe 1/4 to 5/16?

I personally don't think it damaged the compressor at all. Maybe a slight loss of efficiency.

I've seen units 15 or more years old that have 1/4" liq. lines, where 3/8" was on the unit. The compressors are all original. And running well.

Yes, there is a switch that turns the compressor off if it gets too hot. If your HVAC company can't solve the problem, you'll have to get someone in who knows what's going on and if it's a new warranty thing, back charge (or try to) the original company. The next time (if there is one) shop more carefully.
