SkyHeating has a web sight with a live closed loop system shown. The difference between the EWT and the LWT is on average 3.5 degrees cooler. Is this a benchmark average or just average for this system? Would the same system, if say had a open loop have the same temp. drop if EWT was 62 degrees? Would a larger system have a greater drop or less drop in temp.?

I have both a 3.5 ton and a 4.9 ton system. Both have EWT of 62 degrees. The 3.5 LWT is 52 and the 4.9 LWT is 60 and has a hot water loop that keeps the storage tank at 127 degrees. Which is more normal or average a 10 degree drop or a 2 degree drop? Both heat just fine and only run on stage 1.

The real question is does the 3.5 get enough water and or does the 4.9 get to much water or are they both just normal for each one?

The live closed loop site is http://www.welserver.com/WEL0626 and it shows a waterfurnace NDZ038 dual stage unit with desuperheater on a horizontally bored ground loop.

The 3.5 degree EWT-LWT is just the realtime data. Keep in mind that the sensors are effected by garage temperature and they are not in the actual water stream so they are not 100% accurate but do give a good temp number. On average we see a 4 to 5 degree temperature drop between EWT and LWT. This number can be 3-10 degree drop depending on flow rates. So if your GPM is higher or lower the numbers may change.

Are the two systems on the same pump or just the same well?
If they are on the same pump, did you check each temperature drop with the other unit off because the 2 degree drop seems a bit low.

Inside your manufactures specification/install guide it will show a normal operating range based on a set GPM flow rate which you will need to determine based on your pump and piping. If anything your probably not getting enough water for the 5 ton unit but thats a guess. Typically a geo unit will take about 3 GPM per ton of system, so your 3.5 ton should need 10.5 gallons and the 5 ton should need 15 gallons of water per minute. If both are on the same pump and well you need about 25 gallons per minute for proper operation but the units should still run fine with a much lower GPM than this, that is just manufactures spec in most cases.

In all honesty we do not install open loop systems in Oregon so somebody else here like Eric(WaterPirate) or CallaDrilling might be able to better answer your question since they probably know more about flow rates on open loops and what is expected. All the above info is based on my knowledge of closed loops.

Thanks, Enjoy you site. One well in Castle Hayne aquifer. 105 ft deep drawing from 36 feet. Water is at 8 ft. We dump back into Pamlico River which is 150 ft. from front door. Pump does 25 gal./min. 5 ton gets 12 and 3.5 gets 8 when both running at same time which is what Bosch calls for and more if only one unit running. Units heat great. Would like to know where you got sensors but really just would like a good 220 volt hour meter for each unit.

You can buy all the sensors from www.welserver.com its just a guys site and the guy made some software and a WEL server and he sells all the sensors. Our logging was done at the request of a customer so he can monitor all aspects of his system. If you go to the main site you can also see hundreds of other systems being monitored.
