R22 Evap Coil + New 410a Heat Pump = TXV?
Our outside condenser unit is loosing freon and is about 15 years old. We had the inside units replaced about four years ago and got a dual-fuel setup with a Trane XV90.
I have had a few contractors out. The 1st one said we needed a new evaporator coil which would be about $ extra installed. The 2nd one said we could put in a TXV and just replace the outside condenser. The 3rd one said a TXV would void the warranty of everything.

If its not a listed match for the new outdoor unit. Then get a new coil.
Heat pumps don't work well with the wrong indoor coil.
PS: No prices allowed.

How would i know?
>>If its not a listed match for the new outdoor unit<<
How would I (as Joe Average Homeowner) know if my evap coil is a listed match for a Trane XR15? How do I find the evap coil model number on my furnace?
Thanks

A TXV won't fix the problem of having the wrong coil.
Don't try to compensate for the wrong equitment, just get the right equitment to start with. Get the correct coil for the equitment, and be done with it, otherwise you'll have problems down the road."Better tell the sandman to stay away, because we're gonna be workin on this one all night."
"Dude, you need more than 2 wires to a condenser to run a 2 stage heatpump."
"Just get it done son."

If its a case coil. Should have a label on it. if its a uncased coil, with the plenum built around it. You won;t be able to see the number.
Any company that told you it would work fine with your new outdoor unit. Should have look at the number, and written it down so they could check if it was a match to a new outdoor unit. Call them and ask them. If they didn't look for it, and check it. Tells you how much they are concerned about how your new outdoor unit works.
AHRI, is teh rating site that will list if its a match or not.

If the coil is a Trane coil, you "may" be able to keep the coil with a new XB13 or XR13, a TXV change, and blasting as much of the old oil out as possible with nitrogen.
Trane has an application guide on this subject. Page 8 has the chart showing the coil and outdoor unit compatibilities.

Definitely not the best option though...If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

Thanks for all the good info.
The document seems to suggest that my coil (2TXCC049AC3HAA) is compatible with a 4TWR-3048, but as you suggest, it is a 13 SEER unit. Seems as though they don't document matching it with a 15 SEER unit (the contractor quoted a 4TWR-5048)? Is that just an oversight on the document's part, or would it not be compatible with a 15 SEER (4TWR-5048)?

While the 4 ton XR15 is a rated match with the R-410a version of that exact same coil you have, and would work fine with the correct TXV, Trane is pretty specific in that application guide.
From page 5, first paragraph:
"If the customer requests an outdoor unit with a nominal rating above 13 SEER, the indoor and outdoor unit shall be replaced."
It would work, but there may be no warranty...If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.
