Which is better Unico or SpacePak air handler?

I am installing a 4 ton system in my home and the guy helping says he likes SpacePak (ESP-4860 GH4) better for the handler instead of the Unico (MB4860L+CB) with the Unico (MC 4860 cm), but wants Unico for jet tube and most everything else. Any thoughts on this? He hasn't installed a high velocity for about 10 years, but in the area he used to live he installed about 300 of them. Not sure if there has been many changes over those years on jet tube or air handlers.

I have a Burderus Furnace, so I am thinking no heat pump, but am open for suggestions on that as well.

My home is not a good home for conventional, so that decision has been made.

    Thanks for any help,
    Curt

I would not get that brand. Do you have gas heat or electric? If gas you will need a fossil fuel kit with a heatpump. If electric you need to stage in the heat strips according to outdoor temperature. And keep the heat pump running as long as possible to really maximize your savings on electric. I would get a better brand like rheem or goodman/amana. Also get a variable speed blower opposed to a multispeed much more energy efficient for not much more in cost.

I have gas. Not sure I understand your post though. Looking into what people feel is better, a Unico air handler or SpacePak. Also, which jet tube is better and why?

    Thanks.

Either airhandler is fine. Sometimes whichever fits is best for the application. Most important is quality of install especially with these a/h's. If you trust your installer go with his recommendations

Thanks for the replies. We are going to check out prices tomorrow. I did find an online store that offers both SpacePak and Unico. That was nice, but don't know if online store prices as good as local. Guess prices are voodoo though.

We use spacepak. They seem straight forward enough. We dont do alot of high velocity, when we do its the spacepak inside and trane outside.

Unico or spacepak will do the job if a conventional airhandler is out of the question..

The biggest problem I see is the person you are having performing the job is not up to the job at hand..

This sounds like a diy or friend of a friend job.. Never a happy ending in this line of work..
You need to find a hvac contractor that is trusted by friends and relatives that specializes in hi-velocity airconditioning, not a sideshow bob...

I have only helped put one hi-velocity system in many years ago, I do remember it must be designed very well or the system will not operate correctly.. This is not a conventional system.. Anyone that has installed hi-velocity systems knows that..

    Unico or spacepak=ok
    Sideshow bob= no go..
    Hi-velocity hvac specialist=priceless
For the sideshow bob repairs the hi-velocity hvac specialist takes Mastercard...lol

    Both are good units.

Remember. If you buy online. You get to order your parts in and wait. And if the guy you use is not familiar with them. Then he may have you order the wrong parts.

SpacePak is better for one reason: it is the brand that I sell wholesale to contractors!

More seriously though, the contractor is the main concern for any brand or type of system you have installed. HVAC is not a DIY project for many reasons. Just as the contractor is the brand to the consumer, the wholesale distributer is the brand to the contractor.

With some distributors such as the one I work for, we sell the contractor the equipment, we teach the contractor how to size, install, set up and service the equipment, we handle warranty issues on that equipment and we are there with expert help if there are problems with the equipment.

You are not going to get that level of service from an Internet company. You are going to get a box of stuff that you and a somewhat technically inclined friend who hasn't done this sort of thing in ten years are going to muddle through installing.

As for which of the air distribution system is best; that depends on your application.
