    Hmm

I'm the guy to raised his hand.. volunteer to paint the
basement of a 36 unit condo ''basement''. My question is..
and I'm a stickler for safety.. There are, yes, you guessed it, 36 gas pipes (natural gas) leading from 36 gas meters in the middle of our basement elevator lobby. It's
my understanding that gas pipes should be painted black (they are presently painted the off-white, same as the ceiling) which they are running 2'' from,.. should I bring them back to black for safety sake. Are there codes that natural gas pipe should be black? I thought there would
be no mistaking them for water pipes if they were black.. I'm I going over-board..or What!!!! I don't think this is
a local code thing.. just common sense... or am I just plain toooo picky?

My understanding is the yellow gas pipe signifies a high-pressure line, "a line over 26" wc".... I've seen gas lines painted black, white, etc.... Probably would be best to check local codes...

Canadian code requires a yellow band every 6 ft or bend or tee etc other wise paint them any colour you like.

Yellow, or a stencil/sticker every 25' or in each room along length of pipe.

In the Navy all the pipes are color coded. White = steam, yellow = fuel oil, purple = jet fuel, green = sea water, a whole rainbow in the boiler room!

    Hmm Gas Piping Identification

According to the 2003 International Fuel Gas Code (section 401.5 Identification)

"For other than Black Steel Pipe exposed piping shall be identified by a yellow label marked "Gas" in black letters. The marking shall be spaced at intervals not exceeding 5 feet. The marking shall not be required on pipe located in the same room as the equipment served."
