Hi, I am a tech school student due to graduate soon, I have a DUI and a marijuana conviction, no felonys, clean cut, smart, and am currently not using any drugs and can pass a drug test. Just wondering how different shops deal with a marijuana conviction. Seems marijuana is defiantly much worse to have on your record then a DUI. I see some work places have things that say Drug free, will drug test, or sometimes even 100% drug free. Someplaces just say will criminal backround check. I am just wondering about any info on the hiring info regarding drug policy of diffrent shops. I know some with lax drug policys get alot of druggies, which I wouldnt want to work for, I am very gung ho and dont want to work with a half ass crew. Yet other shops will not consider anyone with any drug or criminal backround, I would never really want to even work for a shop like this, condenming people for things every single one of them have done but obviously never got caught for. Then theres the middle of the road companys, those that fairly judge those employed and act accordingly, but dont prejudge applicants who may be worth a crap. Another question, around how long does a marijuana conviction blackball and 86 a person from getting on with a company who is " 100 % drug free".?

I think the marijuna wont even come into play. Likely at worst it was a misdemenor and may not even show up on your backround check. The DUI will screw you. You have to remember that The company you work for has to insure the van you are driving. Why pay a insurance premium for a rookie with a DUI?

besides learning the field you are going to have to prove you don't drink and or smoke and catch the attitudes from the exsisting techs...take the hit with verbal crap and hook in with a good shop.it won't really matter till you start with a van which might be 2 summers away,PMs..filters and belts they might get you into one quicker?i had started with a company a couple of months ago and in the first week was riding with another tech(waiting on a van set-up)first day with this guy riding home he asks..."would you mind if i smoked in the van,no problem...he lights up a JOINT for the 90 minute ride home.the next day i ripped his ass on putting me in such a situation his retort...well you said it was OK..me,don't ever do it again and he went down a list of techs and bosses who smoke in the company.there is a lot of drugs in our industry, and with all the stuff that's turning and sparking and lifting it catches up with "those people" when somebody gets hurt..then you hear "oh,he smokes"

It's the insurance companies that give a hard time about those things.
Make sure you keep your driving record clean.
And remember, what you do on your time CAN have an affect on your job time.
.....And keep your 'record' to yourself. The 'shop' doesn't need to know your business

Different shops have different policies
The one I'm in now has a no DUI policy because of truck insurance. And only a mojor felony would keep you from being hired. I don't even think a manslaughter conviction would stop you from being hired at this shop.

Just say no

One DUI can get you fired and prevent you from providing for your family. Sucks but thats the way the system works. Don't blame the employer, blame the insurance company."The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten". --Benjamin Franklin

It's my understanding that it "Falls" off your record in 5-7 years...
(For insurance)
You can pull your own record in most states.
Check with your DMV

You could definitely get a job easily at the company I work at, unfortunately you wouldn't want to. I've been here 4 days as an apprentice and have discovered, everyone has a horrible driving record including DUI's, and even driving company vehicles with no license at all(or has been caught doing it in the past). 85% of them currently use drugs( yes at work). I am not into any of that **** and wish that it was a drug tested and more clean cut company.
I love the new job so far, and enjoy learning the trade, but boy do I have bad luck on picking a company to work for.

I am all for a drug free workplace, but what I am asking does this bar from employment someone who as a marijuana conviction? its hard to tell sometimes and if I knew I wouldn't bother applying at those places, It doesnt bother me if that is the policy, theres other places to work. What does bother me is attitude some people have that if a person as a marijuana conviction then they are a dishonest criminal, yet these same people don't regard a DUI in the same way.
About the DUI thing, it happened in 1999 and I had never had a ticket before or after it, my insurance as been going down recently, I am 23 so I think still considered high risk. Think many shops could let my DUI slide given the amount of time its been? I really want to be a service tech

sr-22 here last 3 years, I found driving convictions remain on record here for 5 years, so hopefully this means I will soon have a clean driving record. I got convicted of my marijuana thing June of 2003. Getting the marijuana thing definitaly changed my life, and I have really turned it around since then, I guess keeping that in mind will atleast give me more confidence when I go on interviews and such. Worse that can happen I guess is employer does not ask about before he hires me then finds out about it on my backround check after I have been working there for a few days and fires me. As happened to me before, which I have since found out is against the law...I think? anyway it happens all the time around here
Oddly enough today I get a call saying so and so went got a DUI and spent the day or so in jail, and whiles he there he sees a old friend of mine who I haven't seen or talked to in a year or so because he decided to steal from or piss off nearly everyone who knew him due to a crank habit. Turns out he got 10 years for getting caught making the stuff. Sad, but I guess he would probaly just end up dead sooner then that anyway had something not intervined.
