    I swear I cleaned it

Techs since 1995 have never split these coils to clean them. the original zip ties were still on the coil from the factory. The list of techs includes AT&T ACS techs, and about a half dozen local and national commercial service companies. The amp draw dropped from 30 FLA (the max) to 24.5 FLA. OAT was 95F.

5.5 amps is not much until you multiply it by 50+ units. I can't even imagine how many compressors have been changed out. I have a unit next to the one pictured that is locked rotor. It is only four stories to the roof and there is no elevator. Want to help?

Lack of care what a surprise. Maybe it will just peel right off.

I haven't worked on any rooftops as my work does not have any accounts for commercial, I had no clue there were 2 coils and that you can actually snap the zip ties to get in and clean the inner coil.....

I'm assuming double coils on rooftops are seen on larger TON'S ?

Split condenser coils like that have been used in residential equipment for decades too.

Double condenser coils have been in use in residential equipment since the 70's.

Lennox has used them at least that long ago, as did Coleman and Magic Chef.
Some sizes of the old York "tombstone" units have them.
Lots of ICP 10 SEER units from the early 90's on have them.
Carrier/Bryant/Payne/Day & Night used them as far back as the 80's. I don't remember if I've seen any of their round or "canned ham" units with double coils, but if so, it would be as far back as the 70's.
The list of manufacturers that have used them, even in 10 and lower SEER equipment, is pretty long.

Their use has only increased with the higher SEER drive of late.

It's a stupid design, but used by many manufacturers.
Just last week I cleaned two different Lennox residential 3.5 ton units that had this same problem.
20 years old and never before separated.

I have seen Split coils on chilled water indoor coils in a school job. Each section was two rows thick with a total of 3 sections or 6 rows. There were 3 dirt collecting surfaces on each coil. Nasty design.

The split coil is less expensive to manufacture than a solid coil is. That is the bottom line.

I'm just curious, other than amp draw did you take any head pressure readings before and after? I did one on a Trane split system that dropped the head pressure 30 pounds.

I am a contractor working as an Air conditioning specialist (ACS) for AT&T full time. I take care of everything from small huts to large central offices, about 55 buildings. I run my own show. As long as the routines are completed and critical repairs are made in a timely manner I don't hear anything from anybody.

Redundancy is built in. If a chiller goes down the other chiller comes on and takes over. After hours call outs are rare and usually false alarms or a problem with the DDC which I can work on via dialup or online.

Not on this one. It is four stories to the roof and no elevator. I only take up what I need.

I have about 50 of these condensers. The head pressure drop on the ones I checked ranged from about 30# to 50#. The biggest thing is the improvement in cooling performance. The units run less hours. We all know the most efficient unit is the one not running.

    split coils

I found out the hardway about the voyager split coil design. When i first started at property, all eleven rtu's would constantly trip on high head pressure. I went through everything and could not understand wtf was happening.I would go clean the coils and water would go thru the coils and they would appear to be clean. I took unit apart and found a 3/4 inch pollen blanket between the coils. Every year it was all mucked up again so i made Coil Pre Filters out of furring strip and some misquito netting and it may be ugly but i have not had to split the coils since jerry rigging my prefilters on rtu's.
