This is a confusing thread. The support for union workers is supporting socialism in a capitalistic Democratic Republic. Are we saying that the United States should be Socialized?

Unions were good when they started, but just like anything they have been corrupted.

I have seen some very lazy union workers who would have never gotten away with stealing time from a regular company thrive in a union. Laziness is not acceptable to me so my initial impression was not too good. I have met a few very hard-working union men and was impressed with their knowledge, but I must admit there were more lazy ones.

America is such a great country because our government said that business should be based on supply and demand. Our government stayed out of our business and let us compete fairly with one another. Only competition provides the motivation to improve products, services, etc.

Unions, while perceived to be "needed" by the slanted history books we read, have socialized American business and taken "supply and demand" out of the picture. By skewing this system, corporate America has had to pay workers more than they deserve and cut corners in other places in order to make ends meet.

Then we wonder why all of our businesses are going overseas. Corporate America can't spend the money they need on R&D and improving their products when the unions are sucking them dry. Simple solution: Go somewhere else.

This is a free market world. Compete. You must live by the rules of supply and demand, not in some union fantasy where people can get away with being paid more than they deserve.

........ do moral issues ever enter into your decisions on how you will vote? Or are you just a puppet on a string that can't make a decisive move of your own? Better watch out for those union strings that can tangle up your ability to think and move on your own.........

I'm a union guy that is voting republican based on moral standards......... besides, even IF Kerry was a man of morals that justified my vote decision---- there's still the issues of how he stabbed in the back ALL the Vietnam Vets with false accusations of war crimes upon returning from his 4 month tour of duty. He now wants everyone to believe that he is the only hero to return from the Vietnam War? He changes colors to what-ever pleases the crowd.

    Kerry vote?............. what a waste.

This Republican had several union jobs where he was surrounded by ignorant complaining people who stole everything they touched, tolled me how to think, took part of my paycheck and who leaders drove Cadillac's while I was driving a Ford Escort. Yeah, everything was gloom and doom and someone was suppose to be f***king us all the time. Just trust in them and they would be your hero, help is on the way! Reporting for duty

Sounds like a democrat was the natural thing to be in a union. But is was still a Republican then.

This country needs a major overhaul in its workingman ideals.
Bush should get alot more done in that area and many others in another 4 years as the POTUS.

WOW! A lot of interesting stuff here. I guess THIS is what makes america what it is. You can tell me something that I don't belive in and I won't chop you up with a machete! To say the "DEMON crats" or the "re DUMB licans" have even the slightest hold on morals or whats rigth is very funny. All we have is people. Some people are good some really suck. ALL it takes is one hitler in the apple barrel. To say one side or the other is completly right, therefore the other is completly wrong, belies an emotional response, to a whole system of extremely complicated group of smaller systems. No one knows what is right, some have much better guesses but at best they are guesses. If we are all so smart and know everything, why is this country such a mess. THE democrats and the republicans have both had the chance to run things. Look what we got. The lack of workmanship, putting in a 40 hour week, don't steal lie cheat, These are values that you choose everyday, which ever side you choose to associate with. The only way we will survive is to do what we are doing here without machetes, which is what this section is about. Thanks for all your resonses, putting yourself out there takes guts.
there but for the grace of god, go all of us

There is an interesting book Called "What's the matter with Kansas" by Thomas Frank. He talks about how a State with the poorest county in America votes overwhelmingly Republican. The reason they vote Republican is for purely cultural(moral standards) reasons. Mainly religion and abortion. The irony is that the republicans being in power have effected almost no change in that area while economically they-the Republican voters- are worse off because of Republican leadership. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

The Conservatives position is based on principle and principles never change (or at least they shouldn't).

And I will vote for the most conservative person or group whoever that happens to be, not withstanding, I won't waste my vote either.

BTW, at least I vote twice! That is, my wife and I.

I live right next to Kansas, and have both sides of my family in Kansas. I have no idea what county you are talking about or what "poorest" means, (in terms of household income, wages, unemployment, etc.) but it is my guess that this county not only holds moral standards, but also genuinely doesn't care that their lifestyle doesn't involve expensive cars, cable TV or internet. I have met a great many people in Kansas who like their rural, simplistic lifestyle and could care less about anybody else who tries to tell them that the rest of the country has leaps and bounds on them in terms of luxuries and technology.

Further, to suggest that their Republican voting record has anything to do with their "poorest" designation is totally obsurd. Oklahoma City, an overwhelmingly DEMOCRATIC region, had 40% of the African American populus living in the city limits at or below poverty level 30 years ago. Today, after $4.3 TRILLION (That's Trillion with a T) spent on welfare and social programs, 40% of the African American populus in Oklahoma City is STILL at or below poverty! The Democratic party, the party that claims they will be the ones to help the minorities and the poor, have been unable to help those they swear up and down they protect by even one percentage point.

So don't try to claim that these people in Kansas are shooting themselves in the foot when the other party can't change anything, either.
