Ye olde P3 450 at home still does most of what I need including grapic intense games. Sure would like to see what a new unit would do though.
Watts New, Ohm My, I been Electrically Commutated. Are U2.

Athalon 2500. I'am impressed with the processor, but wish I would have stuck with Windows 2000 instead of XP.

You wish you had a 2.8 GHz Athlon.
AMD doesn't even make one that fast yet. On the other hand, their AthlonXP 3000 runs at 2.2 GHz and their Athlon64 runs at 2.0 GHz. Do you have the 32 bit or the 64 bit platform? AMD's 64 bit systems make for nice gaming rigs. Though you need a decent vid card. So many of the mass producers give you awesome CPUs bundled with crappy video cards.
Excuse my splitting of hairs. I'm a stickler for accuracy.
They are indeed mean machines. I've assembled more than a half dozen Athlon machines from scratch myself.
Ironically my current rig is a Pentium4 running at 3 GHz. I've got a half gig of Corsair's low latency ram and a GeForce Ti4200 vid card to go along with it. I had upgraded to a Radeon 9800 Pro but sent it back. I don't deal with any graphics that even comes close to stretching my old cards abilities. Besides, the latest generation from ATI and Nvidia smoke the 9800 series in a bad way. I'm waiting for a good price on one of those.
The main thing is that I like quiet. You literally can't hear my machine running. Even when I'm not shouting on this forum, you still can't hear it.

What games are you playing? 64 bit games are very few, if any as of yet, even the OS isn't written for 64 bit yet.
XP is the first MS true 32 bit OS.
64 bit offers no advantages yet, until software is written for it.

U R right. However, AMD's 64 bit machines also happen to run 32 bit apps extremely well. If they weren't priced so high, they'd be THE CPU to have for gamers. If money were no object, the top of the line 64 bit chip from AMD would be the chip to use for 32 bit gaming. That and SLI action from Nvidia would be "this shiz".Originally posted by bobby7388

It said 2.8 on the display
Well, i think i've been shafted. On the display at Best Buy, it said 2.8 but i cant find it on this box anywhere.
AMD Athion XP 3000+ processor
512MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM memory
160GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA hard drive
8X DVD+R/RW drivewith CD writer capabilities
CD-ROM drive 48x max speed
V.92 data/fax modem
intergrated 10/100 Base T network interface
I guess this means it doesnt have a game card. I dont see any info on 32 bit or 64 bit platform.

Well it has a vid card. It might even have a somewhat decent video card. Obviously the lack of a mention on the list just means that the card is not spectacular, so they didn't mention it as a feature. But it may still be decent.
And I woudn't say you go shafted. An AthlonXP 3000 DOES perform like a Pentium4 at 3 GHz. It depends on the application of course, but both chips run about the same. In fact, I built an AMD system with a AthlonXP 2700 in it for my brother. I couldn't possibly tell you which one is faster, his or my P4 3.0 GHz. They run and feel the same to me.
3 gigahertz or AMD's equivalent is roughly the sweet spot now. Go much higher and you pay hundreds more just for a few hundred megahertz increase in CPU speed. Don't feel shafted!

I built my present Athlon 1.6 ghz system 2 or 3 yrs ago. I've got a rule about upgrading. If it ain't over twice as fast as the old one, and the old one's still doing ok, I'll wait. Also, as Ira says, you're blowing lots of extra money by going after the top speed unit. I usually shoot a couple of notches lower to get the biggest bang for the buck.
