I've been calling around to different union shops about potential entry level employment. One contractor didn't have any spots open in hvac service but he said he might in 'controls'. He seemed to think that my computer background would be beneficial. Im not sure what to think of this. I would assume a regular hvac service tech would have more opportunities since building automation seems kind of specialized - but then again, what do I know. I'd like some feedback from someone

Controls are the way to go if you have an interest in both computers and HVAC. I have started several entry level guys in the controls side. If the company has good support, is willing to spend time on developing you, and currently has good control techs you can't go wrong. I would recommend looking at least. The good thing is that the controls are usually indoors!
