    Lightning Vs. Goodman Gas Pack

    Hello Everyone!

I am a building contractor in North Carolina. My personal home was struck by lightning this weekend. We have a Goodman unit that appears to have took a direct hit. My HVAC man came and checked it and said everything wired is fried. He said it hit it so hard that it knocked the terminals off of the compressor. It was purchased around 2004. Is it worth fixing? Or, should we replace the unit?

    Thanks for the help.

If the compressor/fan motor windings got damaged, replace the unit.

6 years old. That much damage.

Unless your Homeowners insurance is willing to pay the cost to repair it, your best off tearing it out and replacing the whole unit. The chances of HOI doing it are slim to none...

This would also be a good time to look into higher efficiency models that will provide better indoor air quality.

If you don't know, then don't do. If you don't know and still do, then be prepared to pay someone else a lot to undo what you did and then do it right.

If you do know, then do. But do it right. Otherwise, you may not be doing it long.

I'd say replace it too, but be careful with homeowner's claims because insurance companies like to drop you on your first claim.

Call you insurance agent. Insurance companies have wised up over the years. Finding out what your claims record is is as simple as them running an ISO check. If the insured is a frequent flyer, then getting the boot is likely, but in most cases, your comp coverage will take care of your lightning strike and you won't have problems.

Thank you all for your help. It is well respected from industry professionals! The insurance claims adjustor contacted me today and said that they would replace the whole unit less my deductable ($250). We heat and cool just under 2000 sq ft. on one level. The Goodman was a 2.5 ton - 10 seer gas unit. With gas prices I am thinking of going back all electric. What unit size and brand do you folks recommend for the footage and efficiency.

    Again, Thanks for the advice!
