How my last job of 2015 went...

Easy peasy. Go out to this new assisted-living center and start up their new Rational WE '62e combi. We only got the call on Wednesday late, they need it started up Thursday to open for the state inspection on Monday morning. No oven, no meals. Gotta be done.

Fat, dumb and happy, I get there 10 am-ish Thursday. Looking forward to getting out stress-free a little early, not to return until Monday.

Checked out the installation done by Other People(tm), good enough to go.

Apply power, switch 'er on, and.... and.... computer sticks at the 5 senses logo display. Forever.

Hookay, I know a few things to check, both learned and told to me in training (checking my notes). Reseat this, wiggle that. Drop power for 15 minutes. Dead. Insert magic USB key to reflash / update software. ****e! Gets about 1/2 way through and just hangs. Forever. I'm thinkin it's really screwed now. A semi updated beast that will not complete startup or update. Hmm, the 3 led's on the cpu board seem to indicate it's alive and thinking. It's now about 1:00. Time to call the factory.

Ha! The person on the phone explains she's just the phone person, no one is available. She takes my info for the on-call tech to call me back. Right away. Real soon.

Try never. As of 5pm, didn't get a call and the oven is non operable. Told customer very sorry, but it's beyond my ken, and I hope you can open next week without your only oven.

Funny. The new ovens don't react the same way to pulling all power as well. Had a few messed up relay/main pcb that wouldn't turn on. My guess would either be the main pcb or faulty memory card.

Yeah. The old scc control was nice. To nuke it just pull the battery out, pull the network cable out, baddabing you're good as new.

The dubyaee control will only stop the current program. If it's in the middle of something when the power drops, and it's less than 15 minutes for the power to return, it resumes running where it left off. More than 15 minutes it should abort and return to idle state. Doesn't affect the actual state of settings or errors though.

Yeah, might be the sd card. Klaus was so adament about the sd card being "very special", no one could read it, and if inserted into a computer it would destroy the card/computer/earth itself. I has asked why we couldn't just down load replacement software and reflash it ourselves. That's when I got the "it's magic" speech.

I know they use a version of Linux for the software, and the card is prolly just formatted as ext2 or something, so I could reflash it on a Linux laptop or desktop. Sure, put that card in a Windows machine and Windows will helpfully offer to reformat it because it can't read it.

Yeah. I run Linux and OSX at home; occationally Windows, and only for this reason: At the shop we are not allowed to insert external devices (usb sticks, phone) into any of the Windows (7!) computers. And because I don't normally run a Windows machine at home, how do you update the Rational usb stick(or Alto or Cleveland or Electrolux) which is/are Windows only?

Well, cutting to the chase, as I am want to do, you get the cheapest laptop on sale, in my case $119 out the door. Nice little rig, really a 11" Chromebook spec but with Win10 on it. Actually pretty nice for low-intensity uses.

Ha! Love it. I was always amazed, back in the day, when people would be looking down the throat of a carburetor, working the throttle on a running engine, "troubleshooting" something. They didn't name it Back Fire fer nothin. I like keeping my eyebrows.

Following up on my Rational scc 62 with a dead display.

Pete says if this happens, pull the SD card fully out, power unit up- it should run. If it does, replace SD card. If it doesn't boot, replace CPU board.

I had to replace the CPU board- a real pain in the newer 5 Senses units. It went through it's selt test etc with flying colors.

And they passed state inspections, so yet another happy customer.
