Where did you get that old vacume pump? I see you prefer yellow jacket gauges...me too.

FLASHBACK: Lower level, Number Two Engine Room, USS Jouett. Standing lower level watch, eighteen to twenty-four. Quiet watch, steady steaming about 15 knots, fairly calm seas,
Suddenly....TOTAL DARKNESS! I can't see a damn thing! It's pitch black, the air temperature is shooting up by the second, relief valves everywhere begin lifting and filling the space with steam.
But...all is not lost! It's actually not all that dark, just compared to the brilliant lights that are now dead. BATTLE LANTERNS! A buddy comes down to hold one for me as I rush around spinning shut valves and checking for lube oil leaks.
All in all, just a typical night on watch when we were steaming split with Two Fire Room losing the load.
Otto, thanks for the flashback...perhaps.

Yep, the old yellow battle lanterns. Lost our main generator once when a fire main line burst a valve right above it. Lost all power but boilers kept on steaming as all auxiliaries are steam driven. Kept my water level with a battle lantern. Must have been 200° down there in 5 minutes. Power came back on and I went up escape hatch. Hit the cool air and passed out.
The lantern was an eBay find.

I was a machinest mate in the Navy. That lantern brings back a lot of GQ drills doing stopp and locks on the main. As a messenger of the watch, the only thing keeping you from falling into the bilge in shaft alley during the bearing inspections is that lantern. Rock on man.

Have you guys registered on http://www.hullnumber.com yet.
That site has every boat from tugs to carriers. I have met up with a lot of buddies since I got out. I regret something from my NAVY davy though. I never quite made it to MMOW I left at throttles. Good to hear that I am not the only snipe out there. When Chuck Norris falls in water, Chuck Norris doesn't get wet. Water gets Chuck Norris.
