    what do you think happened???

Went on a call today and saw 2 compressors blown out at electrical pins, 2 contactors welded shut, all wires burnt, oil all over the door from the compressors, but the fuses did not open up.
    Trane m= TTA150B300FA s= 8161P4PAD.
This is a split system with the evap coil 24 feet above the condensor, no traps in the suction line but there is a pig tail trap in both liquid lines. I dont have a good diagnosis to tell the customer yet except the obvious.

System had a leak, compressors went into a vacuum, electrical arcs in the compressor burned out the terminals, air entered the holes where the terminals burned out, overheated oil vapor in compressors ignited from the electrical arcing and blew the fusetite plugs out spewing burnt refrigerant oil all over the place.

    Bummer.

Robo, I take it you've seen this before. Also that make sense since the 1st and 2nd stage were tied together. Why??? I have no idea (LOW BID) I guess.
I'm going to check with Trane but do you think they need A trap on the lines.

    That's a great explanation, sir.

[QUOTE=toptwo;6781142] Also that make sense since the 1st and 2nd stage were tied together.

Because they only had a single stage thermostat.

I have indeed run across a few of these. I have also had the unpleasant experience of having one blow while I was standing next to the unit. A change of underwear was in order that day. A very loud "BANG" followed by plumes of obnoxious smelling oily vapor is not a thing that will make your day.
