I've seen this twice on two different Twilight Zone episodes. A young couple walking down the street holding hands. One set was walking toward a pole and the guy pulled the girl to him and said "bread and butter". Then muttered something about saving her life. On the other episode the couple was broken up by a kid running through their hands.

    What does this all mean?

That reminds me of the time we pulled into a rest stop along the interstate and as soon as we got out of the car an old man pulled my girlfriend to the side and whispered to her "If you listen carefully, you can hear the corn grow on the other side of the road." And then he walked off.

Have a field right behind my house. Ground needs some moisture in it, like if it's been watered or rained within a couple of days. Also need a hot damn day, 'round sunset. Ya kinda have to use your imagination but the whole field "creaks" a little.

Meanwhile, back at the original question...... "Bread and Butter" calling my wife now...... She says it means when you both walk around hand in hand, if your in love, you can't be seperated, like butter stuck on bread, once it's spread. So I guess if something comes between, they say Bread and Butter just to remind you not to let that happen anymore. Hows that?

I grew up on old Warner Bros. cartoon shorts. When two friends in a 'toon would allow an object, such as a streetpole, pass between them, they also would say "bread and butter". So I guess it's also a friendship thing.

Me and my wife say it whenever we have to go separately around an object. Just shows our age, I guess.

When Dice was there, they heard creaking bones, or a goat.

On a warm summers eve sitting out with the stalks,
I was simply amazed when I learned, corn talks.

A Diamond is just a piece of coal, that made good under pressure!
