XP and 2k use the basic NT kernal, but XP has an updated version.
I tried 2k and hated it, but just my opinion.
Bill Gates and his boys are working on a new version called LONGHORN.
I don't know much about it but it will have a different look....

It will be at least another year until it is out anyway. The Beta version of it that was supposed to be out this summer has been pushed off.
I do computer work on the side. I have had 3 customers this summer say the only thing they do with their computers is check E-Mail and use the internet. They asked me what they should buy because I told them their machines were old, out of date, and needed to be replaced.
I told them Macintosh.
Blows my mind how so many people will bash Microsuck and never bother to think that they have a choice in operating systems, such as Macs, and even Linux if you dare to get into a slightly-more-difficult operating system.
