Have you ever heard the expression "Bald as a Jay-Bird"?
Apparently some, not all, Blue Jays molt all of their head feathers at once, this is one of those unfortunate ones. Either that or it is BigBird when he was younger.

My chickens stick their tounge at me too.
You sure take some great pictures of birds.
I feed the doves, sparrows & squirrls in my yard every morning.

That looks like my xwife on her way to becoming a vulture.
Some great pics Don. Wish I had that kind of wildlife around here, although some bald eagles (i see them all the time)make home about 3 miles from here in the winter. I guess they like to fish on the down side of a dam which never freezes in the winter. You must have a reallly good camera for those pics!
Acouple of weekends ago I went for a long walk on some trails in the woods around the cottage (with my GPS!). I found this beaver pond and there wer 3 otters in it, really close to me! I have never seen otters in the wild before, they were big, about 3.5 feet and looked like seals.
Of course I didn't have my camera with me. I have since gone back twice (2 miles uphill!) with my camera and telephoto lens, but not a sign of life.
Here is the beaver hut. The second pic is on the lake, looks like a male and female loon.

Is this a loon tryed to paddle up to one once close enough for a pic. That baby disappeared and didn't come up for at least a 1/4 mile, toyed with us for atleast an hour before we gave upOriginally posted by Don Sleeth
How's this for up close and personal!
I got some neat pics of a pair of mystery birds at the cottage. I have no idea what these are, I thought they were Loons at first but that is not it. For one thing Loons have black beaks. And that female one is very different. I love her hair style

Not that I have ever seen one or would recognize one on the street.

Here is a pretty interesting bird. They have a nest on the top of a tall birch tree in the woods I walk through. She wasn't very happy to see me. It is amazing how they can fly through the trees without hitting the branches!

Hey cockroach, don't bug me! ©
Great shot Don. Were you standing on the ground to catch the first shot? Looks like you were higher up than that. Looks like a breed of hawk. We have red tailed hawks here that I've been trying to get a good shot of. I'm glad you are finding time now for a great hobby. My D70 goes around with me but I rarely have time to stop! I'm having a bad case of lens lust lately as well. Compiling a list for birthdays and such (mostly the more affordable primes.) I know, you're a Canon man. I took a few ducks, geese pictures last week. Haven't taken the time to download them yet. Hope to post some soon. Nice work. Keep shooting!

WOW DON!!! I do a lot of 'out-of-town' calls... and constantly stop for digital pics... I've been trying hard to get a good pic of the American Crow in flight... maybe I have the wrong camera. These are some pretty spectacular photos!!! I should send you a short 30 minute photo story of the area where I live, all pics taken by me, some of which are braved in -40 weather. Not many birds... but set to good music, if you'll entertain.
