Thread: What does service really mean?

At one time in my life, I thought I had a handle on the meaning of the
word "service." "The act of doing things for other people."
Then I heard the terms:
Internal Revenue Service
Postal Service
Telephone Service
Civil Service
City/County Public Service
Customer Service
Service Stations
And I became confused about the word "service." This is not what I
>thought "service" meant.
Then today, I overheard two farmers talking and one of them mentioned
that he was having a bull over to "service" a few of his cows.
SHAZAM! It all came into perspective. Now I understand what all those
"service" agencies are doing to us.

The word service originates from the Latin word servus meaning slave. While contemplating your list, I realized I feel like a slave to them.
So this would mean if I were to be serviced by my wife, I will be her slave. Hey, that sounds about right too.
If screwing people is the modern definition of service. Then I know a few contractors who are giving world-class service.

My Hat Off to Webster
All about service and more! Goodness, there are a zillion definitions for the term "service"!
3 to make or keep fit for service, as by inspecting, adjusting, repairing, refueling, etc.
10 installation, maintenance, repairs, etc., provided by a dealer or manufacturer to purchasers of equipment
Personally, I feel comfortable with the aforementioned definitions not to discredit any other.
All enjoy their day!
