I went to do some pm work at a mall yesterday and there was another hvac company hauling there stuff up the ladder befor me. So i was waiting patiently drinking my coffee. Eventually most items where up on the roof except for there 6 cfm vacume pump. The tech grabs the pump and heads up the ladder, the helper makes it to the second rung when kablamo..out go the lights. The handle sliped off the vacume pump and fell about 8 feet hitting the guy below in the forhead. The tech came down and I went to get security to call an ambulance. They put him on a back board with a neck brace and he was still unconsious when they took him away. The poor tech had to stay and wait for another assisstant. I did not get to see the extent of the injuries. I did not want to. I still feel haunted by what I witnessed and hope the cadet will be ok. Goes to show ya that danger is always watching. Be safe all!

OMG! Of all the strange ways to get hurt, who would have thought that would happen? I feel sorry for both of them.

And to never follow someone on a ladder - especially if they are hauling something. Damn - hope the guy is ok.

Couple years back I was climbing a ships ladder in a plant and the next guy patiently waited at the bottom. Just as I got to the top my radio clipped the edge and fell nailing him in the forehead. He had a nice little cut and a golfball knot for a few days. I've always made it a point to keep my distance from the bottom if possible. If he was holding the ladder for the guy he was probably watching some chick walk by instead of watching the guy climb when BLAMMO right in the head. That had to hurt.

Really, that is basic, never even get under a ladder when guys are carrying up stuff, live and learn, we all did and have the battle scars to prove it.

The kid might not get the chance to learn from this. A vacuum pump to the forehead???!!...could be lights out ..permanent.

the only two things you need to know is how can this go wrong and how can i avoid it..they were not thinking...for instance if a system needs service via a ladder we do not service them..no money versus the risk ..only needs to happen once..how much business do i turn away .1 of 1% not a factor

And this is exactly why I never ever ever follow any one up a ladder and why only one person should ever be allowed on a ladder at one time. I hate it when ppl are right up my @$$ coming up a ladder with me. Annoying as hell and adds stress.

    And........

It should have been roped up to the roof...we've all done one handed ladder climbs ...but it sure isn't safe.

First lesson they teach you when you scuba dive from a boat. Don't swim under someone that is trying to climb the ladder to get on the boat. If the boat rolls the person on the ladder could get thrown back into the drink. Right on top of you!

Anyway just to lighten things up a bit. A bunch of us where sitting in a bar after work one day. A big fat guy across the street brought out an el cheapo aluminum ladder.

He extended it and placed it against his house. Well when this big guy started up the thing it was bowing like the letter "C". Everyone was saying, "It's going to go, It's going to go."

Sure enough it bent and collasped in slow motion. The guy rode it down and didn't get hurt. He just stood there with a 'I hope nobody saw that' look on his face. But, man, the laughter in the bar room, especially after a few beers, was something.

While I was in construction the problem was while moving a step ladder. We had a bad problem of putting a hammer or something on top, walking away for a bit, coming back and moving the ladder, the damn hammer hits ya everytime, a cordless drill hurts the worst if you were wondering. I watched my dad get hit on the top of the noggin by a corner of a flat-bar that was on top of a 12' ladder, man it was funny.......not really but you have to know our crew. The worse someone got hurt, the harder everyone laughed at you. Y'all should've seen my brother laugh when you'd smash your finger. Dad used to say he had a sick sense of humor....oh, the good 'ol days.

Man, too bad about the tech in your story though. Hope he pulls through.
