Carrier - AC Supported thermostats? Infinity vs Edge?

    Hello,

I am considering a Carrier Infinity 58CVA furnace (two stage variable speed) one of two air conditioners:

Carrier Base Series 24ABB4 (single stage)
Carrier Comfort Series 24ACB7 (two stage)

The furnace supports the Infinity, Thermidistat™, standard thermostat.

Both the 24ABB4 and the 24ACB7 support the Thermidistat and standard thermostat.

The general consensus on this forum is that I really should use the Infinity Control thermostat for the Infinity furnace. However, neither AC supports that control. Can I still use the Infinity control? Would that work fine with the AC units?

The Thermidistat has a web page, but that page isn't linked from the overview of Carrier's controls. Is the Edge a replacement for the Thermidistat?

What would I gain (or loose) from using an Edge thermostat? Would that work fine with Infinity furnace and the AC units?

    Thanks much!

the only requirement for the infinity control is either an infinity furnace or airhandler. Any OD unit ac or heatpump can be used, just non-infinity needs an OD temperature sensor installed (since OD infinity come with temp sensor standard)

If you have infinity furnace or airhandler-get the Infinity control

The Edge is an excellent thermostat, and is the thermidistat
It's not the Brand with the fewest repairs-It's all in the install!!! Attention to detail and using the best materials!

What does OD stand for? outdoors?

One contractor advised that the two stage air conditioner could not be used with the infinity control. Was he mistaken?

Yes, but if you are going to add a 2 stage ac, go ahead and get the infinity or 2 stage performance series

    2-SPEED NON-COMMUNICATING OUTDOOR UNIT —
The NIM can control a 2-speed non-communicating air conditioner
or heat pump (R-22 Series-A unit) with an Infinity indoor
unit. See Fig. 4 for wiring details.

Sorry-NIM is network interface module. I had the two speed infinity outdoor (OD) in my house, it is worth the extra $ to get compatible communicating equipment

The two stage unit listed 24ACB7 will not work with the Infinity control without an accessory module (NIM).
Have them do the Infinity furnace, with the Infinity control, and if you install the 24APA7, the cost increase will be offset a bunch as you will not need the accessory module, and the Carrier rebate will be much higher.

Hmm... how will my comfort change with the 24APA7? Will the 24ACB7 and the 24APA7 do the same job? Perhaps the SEERs are slightly different, and the 24APA7 is quieter. Warranties are not terribly relevant, since I will probably sell my place before the warranty period is up.

So the 24ACB7 is a "non-communicating" air conditioner. What are the advantages of a "communicating" air conditioner?

Cost is an important factor. I can understand the benefit of going from a 1 stage (e.g., 24ABB6) to a 2 stage (e.g., 24ACB7) A/C unit, and the incremental cost is somewhat reasonable. What are the incremental benefits to moving to the infinity or performance series?

The control logic with the Infinity control, The modulation of the indoor fan due to the communications, allow better humidity control and more even temperature control.

Things like selling your house are all things you must consider when choosing your system.

Frown ERROR E1 witht eh carrier edge

Mine didn't work, kept getting error code E1, the display module and the equipment control module cannot communicate via the two-wire connection.

Most common problem is polarity of wires are reversed or hooked to t-stat wrong.

Installer should be able to figure it out.
