how to start refrigeration business?

I have been certified as universal technician.Can i start my refrigeration business?

Do you have any management experience? Any formal schooling?

Do you have any field experience?

Could you pass a contractor's licensing test?

Do you have about a hundred grand to start out?

There is a lot more to being a refrigeration contractor than that silly little 608 card.

Your 608 license isn't going to get you far, and you didn't make it past the first word in my last post.

I think a time Experior exam might be a little far in your future.

Yeh, but first you have to serve an aprenticeship with someone who has been there and done that. Someone like Icemeister or Condensed Dave. Heck, even Dice & Jack could do the trick for you. If they still have an opening in their Northern office for an apprentice.


It takes experience nowadays to start such a enterprise. If you just got your 608 card, that's wonderful. We here are all happy for you! Seriously, we are!

However, the difference between just having received your EPA card and being qualified to open a Refr shop is the dif between a having just taken passed a course in first aid ... and brain surgery.

I joke not.

If I knew what I would have had to endure and learn and go thru ... all before I entered this fine upstanding trade ... I would have chosen another field of endeavor. For sure!

This is damn hard work and even damn harder learning it! And it's even damn harder to learn it the right way and to practice it the right way. There are so many other there who take so many short cuts ... we who choose to do things the right way .. we have to go around undoing other people's screw up so much of the time.

In fact, if it were not for the screw ups of other people who practice this trade, our jobs would all be a whole lot easier!!! (No Shit!!! )



With all that said, let's talk about your future ... what do you know about refrigeration?
What do you know about managing a service business?
What do yo know about sales?
What do you know about marketing?
What do you know about bidding and job costing? And proposals?
Can you write well?
Can you maintain paper trails?
Do you know about mechanics liens? And judgements?
How about taxes? Do you know about taxes?
How are you on the phone? Can you spend hours upon hours on the phone? In between receiving calls, receiving messages, some of which are urgent and mean the dif between potentially thousands of dollars in food or business sales???

Can yoiu wear twelve hats at one time? How well do you juggle multiple tasks, all at the very same time?



Come here often and post. We are all here to help. But you first need to be able to answer these and many many many many many many many other questions BEFORE considering pening up your own shop in refrigeration.

I an out of the Market Service Businees in 20 hours....not that I am counting. Just got done with 12.5 hours of double time and 15 hours of time and 1/2 yesterday.

NO dave I am going to be a partner in another smaller refrigeration service business which does mostly low H.P. commercial refrigeration,commercial HVAC 20%, and some chiller work ect. I worked for this company 8 years ago and am opportunity to buy in came along so i am going to give it a whirl. I think with my background i will pick up some BJs or other rack work in a year or 2 maybe. ??? I just dont want to turn the company into a 24 hour a day operation like the one i currently work for.

Maybe in a few years i can have a life again.
